What motherboard for Overclocking 1150?

I've been hankering to start a new build to replace my i7 920, but man, after reading, and more reading, and even more reading I still can't figure out what board to settle on for a 4770k!

I'm looking to get back into overclocking on water, and hopefully won't get boned on a bad chip like I was with my 920 (literally doesn't hold an overclock, at all, lol), and I'm hoping you guys can finally help me settle on a board. Not too concerned with price.

Currently looking between the Maximus Formula and the Z87X-OC.

Thanks!

Both motherboards are good. There are two things to consider (In my opinion):
-1. Price, the formula is way more expensive.
*Let me guess, you like the formula because of that shield biggrin.gif
-2. The z87xoc was designed/manufactured with some serious overclocking features.

I would go for the z87xoc, but it's your choice anyway.

out of those two, please dont get the formula, its an overpriced plastic dust trap, and if you want it for the onboard waterblock...definitely definitely definitely x10000000 no.

Heh, though I think the shield is pretty nice, the reason I was looking at it was hearing a couple people swear by how well it overclocks, shield or not.

Also, it's not like they're the only two I'm looking at, it's just the two I've mostly been looking at.

It overclocks like pretty much every other z87 board, with haswell chips, intel put the vrms onto the cpu itself, so a mobo could have 547835764398537 power phases, but the chip still might not break 4.2ghz because its all down to the chip itself this time around, which is lame but oh well.

Go with the gigabyte z87 OC imo, i had one, its really nice especially for the price. The z87 boards ive had are gigabyte z87-OC, asus maximus vi hero, msi z87 GD-65, and now using the evga z87 classified board, my chip does 5.2 on all of them (its a golden chip, dont expect all 4770ks to do it frown.gif ) it all comes down to the bios and ease of use to overclock them and what features you want on the board.

Not really looking for a budget board, especially when for an extra $50 I can walk away with something for higher quality like the z87-oc or a z87 gd-65. I mean, hell, I almost looked at going into the 2011 socket and grabbing a Rampage Black but as things stand there doesn't seem to be enough using 4 cores let alone 6 to make it worth the extra cash yet.

Gigabyte Z87X-OC << Best ATX based OC board for i5/i7
Asus Max VI Gene << Best M-ATX board with all Formula features and less costly.
Gigabyte UD3H / D3H << Best VFM board ( UD3H has on board button's + more Sata port's over D3H )

I have Hero for i7 rig and would say better get Gene for pure OC + Gaming rig
or
UD3H / D3H for all in one rig ( Solid board for it's price ).
