My current PSU is driving me crazy - Page 8

It will de difficult to get a good experience with BF4 on ultra with that rig. But if you don't have a really good rig I always advise to try it on 'high' details in BF4 instead of the ultra detail settings (unless a ow resolution monitor is used). It still looks incredibly good on when everything is set to 'high'.

I play on medium details with a gtx670 to get enough fps in BF4, but on a 60Hz monitor it wouldn't be necessary to do that with a gtx670.

Getting 20-30 FPS in Call of Duty: Black Ops with shadows turned to high and AA set to 8X. I get 60-80 with shadows on medium and AA on 4X.

I think this qualifies for a new rig tongue.gif

If you can afford it and want it: go for it biggrin.gif

Getting a new rig or big upgrade is always fun tongue.gif

OK........either get a new PSU now or a brand new rig after Xmas............are you talking about a prebuilt rig? If not, why not be smart and get a quality PSU that can be used towards the brand new rig?

Yep, that's also an option. I always build the rigs myself.

I feel this thread might have served it purpose tho, but if I were to spend more cash on a PSU for a brand new rig.. which options do I have?

OK, if your going to build the NEW rig yourself eventually and you have a $120 Euro budget, that puts you right in line for an XFX 850w BEFX unit. That unit would allow you to run a pair of high end gpu's with no issue and give you some headroom to spare. Regardless I would be looking at a KM3 based PSU. If you will only be sticking to one GPU then the Cooler Master V700 or a direct Seasonic X series 650-750w PSU(The CM v700 is a Seasonic KM3 unit) would probably be your best bet. My recommendation though is to snag a KM3 unit regardless of which unit you go with.

Ordered the following:
GIGABYTE GA-Z87MX-D3H Z87 S-1150 M-ATX
INTEL CORE I5 4670K 3.4GHZ 6MB S-1150

Next up is to get the PSU, but I decided to upgrade MB and CPU first due to performance issues in games.

Good choice, I think that will do you well smile.gif

The GPU should do just fine a bit into next year. But the PSU is definitely the next on my list. This coilwhine is crazy tongue.gif

The Cooler Master V550S is currently on sale at komplett.no for 635 nok (103$) down from 799 nok (129$).
That offer seems to be pretty good as I can't find any other PSU's at that price point with plus gold ratings. Even the XFX plus bronze PSU's are more expensive.

The coilwhine did go away with my new MB and CPU, most likely due to the fact that I didn't have to use molex to power my fans. But the PSU did make some really weird noises when I ran 3D Mark (I'm pretty sure it was the PSU, but it could have been something else).

Is it a no-brainer or should I just keep my OCZ ModXstream?

Edit: Here's a video of the noise:

It appears to be coming from the PSU.

Edit 2: I went ahead and ordered the CM V550S. I'll tell you how it goes when it arrives in a few days smile.gif
