Its most likely your memory. Considering you have really good graphics cards. I can run Carbon @ High settings and have almost no lag .. just when i start races and the smoke from all the tires is showing .

but my cpu should run alot better with more ram right?

Your CPU won't run any better with more ram..
But your entire system will benefit in terms of performance.
The Ram is the Bottleneck. IMO.

IF its lag its in the connection if its suffering from memory usage its a ram issue.
GO into the task manager and see how much ram is being used in the performance tab. usually 512mb only lets windows run comfortably. If you wanna game go with some dual channel ram and get 2 sticks of 512 or 2 sticks of 1gb. IMO 2 sticks of dual channel ddr ram at 2GB's total is plenty for any gamer.

it could also be from your hard drives...

i had a similar situation a few months back when had my system runing on a solo 250g seagate ide hd, almost stuffed up entirely and the whole gameplay sucked.

i had a nice graphics card (it should run a little better than it was doing) a 2x512 mb ram dual channel, which would also provide enough memory, yet the game freezed and i couldn't run it at higher resolutions and with a nice visual effect.

well, surprisingly (not), once i tried it in my raid array of two sata2 discs there was a huge jump in gameplay quality and i was able to play it at top resolutions and visual effects without freezing or anything.

so, despite being short of memory you should also consider the transfer rate you're gettin from your hdd to the system, cause sometimes it can be slowing you way down.
