iPad - wifi or cellular?

my future mother in law is planning to buy my fiancee an iPad Air as a surprise gift
the difference in price for options seems pretty significant.
since i don't have much experience with tablets, here's hoping some of you can chime in with your experiences

16 GB vs 32 GB?
how much space is recommended?
i doubt there would be too much media stored on the ipad itself. most likely would be through dropbox or something similar
how quickly do apps begin to eat up storage space?

wifi vs cellular?
how important is it having a data plan on a tablet?
the places which she would use the ipad would most likely have some sort of wifi. if not, she would always have her phone with data.
for those of you with only wifi iPad, do you wish you had cellular?

I highly recommend NOT getting anything lower than a 32GB. The amount of apps she uses depends on the space needed but apps utilize a lot of space now and it's only going to get worse.

The easiest solution to getting wifi or cellular is does she NEED to have it work on the go. If not, cellular is a waste. Does she currently have a smart phone? If yes, cellular would be a waste.

My wife has the wifi and we have smart phones, not once have we NEEDED a data plan for it, wifi has worked fine and when we are in a pinch, smart phones take over.

I personally never had a problem with only the 16 gb wifi option. Although if you have a lot of movies and music through iTunes, it's going to be a pretty tight fit with only 16 gb. Also,I have AT&T and I had the option of turning my phone into a wifi hotspot for cheaper than what I would have cost me for a data plan. I always had my phone on me so I could access the web on my iPad whenever I pleased. I would say a 32 gb with wifi and a wireless hotspot would be your best bet. smile.gif

Something I'd like to chime in: On the cellular vs wifi issue, I reckon that depends on how techie the fiancee is. Both my aunt and mom got wifi only iPads and it's been a pain for them to tether to their smartphones. Sometimes, the iPad would lose bluetooth sync with the phone. When that happens, they can't use the iPad for internet stuff until I pair the devices again (tried going through the steps over the phone but they couldn't do it). Neither are particularly familiar with how to connect to free wifi hotspots and since they do online shopping and banking on the iPads, unencrypted wifi isn't exactly something I'd recommend them to use.

Giving my mom my Verizon iPad 3 so she wouldn't have to deal with the complications of tethering. Upside, Verizon has better signal at her workplace so it's bound to be a major improvement over her current iPad 3 WiFi tethered to AT&T iPhone set-up. If/when my aunt's iPad fails, I'd recommend her to get a Verizon iPad, too (Verizon also has better signal at her workplace).
