Upgrade to 8350 from Phenom II x6, or wait for Steamroller?

Hello all, it is time to upgrade my motherboard as it has some bad RAM slots, and I figured that if I am updating my motherboard I might as well upgrade my CPU with it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131872

Those are the two boards I am currently looking at, I thought about getting an 8350 with one, but I heard that the Steamroller was coming sometime soon, so if that is the case should I just hold off on replacing my CPU until that comes out, because this old phenom six core is still running pretty decent.

I just don't want to buy one of those boards and find out that the Steamroller won't even be compatible with it.

Steamroller isn't coming to AM3+. It's a dead socket. However, FM2+ will get the next-gen flagship APU: the A10-7850k, a two module, four core Steamroller CPU and a 512 shader integrated GPU. If you want to upgrade, go with Kaveri unless you absolutely need all eight cores. If you do, get a nice 990FX motherboard, not 970. Gigabyte's 990FX offerings are good, as are ASUS' high-end motherboards (Crosshair Formula V and Sabertooth come to mind).

Sounds good thank you for the input! I will pickup the 990FX and then put a Kaveri into it when it is released on the 14th of January.

And this may sound dumb, but how exactly will the whole integrated GPU thing work? I have a GTX 660 SC already.
NO! It won't be compatible. Kaveri is FM2+ and the only thing using Steamroller cores to hit the consumer market. FX is AM3+ only and 990FX is the high-end chipset for it. You'll need an FM2+ motherboard to use Kaveri and the high-end chipset for that is A88X.

I haven't worked with an APU system, but it should be enabled by default in BIOS and can be disabled or used in hybrid crossfire if you have an additional supported dGPU. Nothing is confirmed yet, but it is likely the 7700 series and R7 260(X)s will work. The iGPU can still be used for parallel floating-point calculations however if you disable it for graphics output (I think, don't quote me on that).

If you are using the integrated graphics, get the fastest RAM the motherboard supports. Graphics like bandwidth and DDR3 doesn't do a very good job of that below 2000MHz.

There is no integrated graphics on the 8350... look on the die.

The integrated GPU just won't be primary if you have your GPU plugged in, no need to do anything.

I think I'll just shell out the cash for now and go with the 8350 and either the 990FX or the M5A99FX ASUS mobo that you suggested, I'm just torn between the two. Leaning towards the ASUS mobo because I like the features it has to offer. And I honestly have no intention of using crossfire.

I am using the evo model of that motherboard. Only difference is the raid controller and pcie lanes. Anyway the digi Vrm is a great overclocking feature. It is a very high quality board.

When I looked at all the 990FX motherboards at egghead they are all AM3+ not FM2+.

Have the FM2+ ones not come out yet?

990fx isnt a FM2+ chipset, its AM3+ only.

you'll be looking at A88x chipset for FM2+.
