Anything better than GT AP-15's? Need help selecting 32 RAD fans! - Page 9

The DBB fans seem to last a lot longer in my HTPCs (60mm fans, very warm cases, quiet) than anything else.

I also only ever ran all my fans in p/p setup.

Also i don't see how data from 2010,2011,2012 wouldn't still be right when the fans are the same as they were back then. Martin did great job testing fans.

Yeah, those Sickle-flow fans really are a good bang for your buck. At $8 a fan it's hard to beat the price/performance ratio. Just be sure to grab a fan controller for anyone considering them, they are by default at 2000RPM which will make a notable amount of noise on any fan.

But if that's true then I'm not sure how FrozenCPU managed to more than double their stock of AP-15s in the past couple days since this news hit. This post that google found suggests that a few days ago not long after this rumor started Frozen had "134 in stock at the moment".

Has there been any confirmation anywhere that the news that Scythe and Nidec have split is true/legit?

They're true, I looked it up briefly and found a statement from Nidec discussing the fact that neither company can make the GT-AP15s due to the designs/motor/copyright not being helt by 1 company.

Link?

No one seems to have any trouble filling orders or getting more stock of these fans. I'm inclined not to believe this rumor at all at this point until someone posts something confirming it.

I exchanged a couple of emails with Performance PC's. They indicated that this isn't true. I'm planning to upgrade one of my rigs with 13 of the AP15's and they said they will not have an issue filling that order.

GTs may be king in noise level, but they have issues with tone for some and I have tested several samples with harmonic spikes at certain RPMs which is an issue when you are dynamically throttling the fan speeds.

Really nice looking fan too and the PWM is great. I have been kind of a yate guy myself, but i really like the PWM, lower cost, and looks of the helix.

Seeing more and more info on the Swiftech Helix's vs the AP-15's and how they're about 2-3 % off but the biggest thing is noise @ high levels as well as half the cost of AP-15's

Looking for any more hard evidence though Martin came out and said they're good, he likes Yate Loons it seems so just wanted to get additional feedback on this, and good to hear about the Nidec Rumor.

In Martin's testing, the Swiftech Helix's did not come anywhere close to the AP-15 when mounted on a rad. They were the worst of the 6 fans he tested in noise level vs radiator air flow. I was seriously interested in buying this fan at one point, but did not only because of how bad it did comparably in Martin's testing.

Not to mention that the Swiftech Helix is a Sleeve bearing fan.

Alright AP-15's it is lol no way around it Thanks guys!

Once I get these I'll start my build log biggrin.gif

Seriously you guys rock , that was A TON of information, and should be used as a reference for anyone in the near future looking for the same info. I think I'll add this to my sig! thumb.gif

yeah, that subjective comment was before I had a chance to test and measure. It can be decieving when you compare by ear using RPM because the GT has a very different PQ curve which means it produced about the same air turning nearly 400 rpm slower. I still like the helix fans for their good looks, low price, and PWM feature which allows easy auto speed control and can mitigate the noise level. BUT..it is no where near as quiet per air flow on a radiator or built as solid as a GT.

It is just a test and your ears are more important, but GTs have continued to dominate low noise per rad air flow for a while now at the 1000-2000rpm range. Not quite sure why or why others haven't made really good comparables, but it is what it is.

I'm also still of the opinion that when you start comparing at <1000 rpm that the differences between fans gets extremely subtile. I still like good old yates at 800rpm myself, or arctic cooling F12s etc. Anything faster than about 800rpm would drive me nuts..smile.gif

I am in the same boat, that is why I ended up having a Phobya Nova Xtreme 1080 slapped to the side of my case with 4 Silverstones AP181 turned down to well below 1000RPM. I could sufficiently cool the whole system down just with the internal rads/fans, but that would require running the fans at much higher speeds, which was an option in my case wink.gif
