8120 Overclocking help!!

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum, this is my first post. I need help with overclocking my 8120. I got a good deal on Craigslist so for $100 I got the cpu and an corsair h50 with no fans. And also an asus m489gtd motherboard for dirt cheap, and I know that it isn't an am3+ board, with the 990 chipset, but the bulldozer CPUs are on the official supported list with a bios flash. So my system is up and running and I would like to overclock to around 4.8 to 5 Ghz, and I really need help doing this as I am new to overclocking. Also I have no budget at the moment for new parts.

So my system specs are
Cpu: 8120 @ 3.7 (only cpu multiplier increase)
Ram: 2x2gb gskill sniper 1866
Graphics: xfx 7850 1gb
Strorage: 1tb WD green
Mobo: Asus m489gtd pro
Power: 650w antec earthwatt

Hey there, first off welcome.

I don't think you'll be able to hit 5GHz let alone 4.8GHz without some proper cooling. Yeah the h50 is a closed loop, but it's a slim single rad and might not be sufficient with the heat the CPU will output.

You can try your luck though: disable turbo boost in your BIOS and up your multiplier and voltages and run Prime95. Maybe this thread will help ya: http://www.overclock.net/t/1142239/amd-fx-8120-overclocking-benchmarking

So far I tried to see if I can run at 4.5 just for the heck of it turned my multiplier to 22.5 and upped my voltage to 1.42 it would boot and was unstable, I kept messing around and changed my fsb to 233 and lowered my multiplier. Also unstable haha I figured my bottleneck is my AM3 board that can't supply the power to my cpu, so right now I am at 4.2 Ghz with just the multiplier at 1.392 volts, it is more stable than my other to configurations, and that is a more realistic overclock.
So right now I am trying to make my system run more stable and try and decrease the voltage. And it's the fine tuning that I need help with.
