1440p or 1080p Eyefinity?

Thread Starter
I am going to upgrade my displays in the next few weeks, and need help which route to go.

I primarily game, some BF4, High-End Games, Source Games, etc and use Photoshop quite a bit as well as video editors and DAWs like Audacity and FL for work.

I currently have a single, run of the mill, DVI/VGA HNC IPS 1080p Display, that has worked brilliantly for gaming. Im not looking for insane 1ms response times, or 4ghz refresh rates ( tongue.gif ), this 8ms, 60hz panel works fine.

I am also running a 5ghz 8350 and an OC Sapphire 7950 3GB

With my budget, I could get 2 more of these same displays, and use adapters I already have to run Eyefinity ( but would have a 2" bezel), which would benifit gaming surround as well as productivity.

I would like more pixels on my screen, but, I suppose moving windows to other screens would suffice as well.

What are your opinions on eyefinity as a gaming setup? I know my single 7950 will not be able to handle 10million pixels in eyefinity, but would have a better shot at the 3.6 in 1440p.

I do plan on cross firing my card once prices come down due to ltc. What is your opinion?

FYI, the panel I am sold on is an x-Star 27"

My current panel is an HNC iP221

This question has come up many times in the past. The way that I come to understand it, eyefinity is cool for like the first 3 months, then it gets old. Now, I have never lived with eyefinity for an extended period of time (I only tried it out at a LAN party for a few minutes), so I can't really tell you that from experience, that's just what I see most people say. For only trying it out for a few minutes, I will say that I though it was pretty cool, but I couldn't see it being worth the price of all of those monitors (especially if they are high-end). I also found the bezels being very annoying. People say that they eventually melt away though.

On the other hand, 1440p I enjoy a lot more. Even though I have not had the chance to game on one, I did have the chance to use one as a desktop monitor and I have to say it was very enjoyable. It gives you a huge productivity boost due to the extra pixels. There are some comparisons on here and people are able to get two programs (like PS, AI, AR, PR, AU, etc) next to each other and work on both comfortably. Also, looking at pictures is amazing as the extra PPI really makes a difference.

So just in my opinion, go for the 1440p. Of course everyone will have their own opinion, but the real way to decide is for you to try both for yourself.

Good luck!

Coming from a dude who did the following upgrade scheme:
1080 then 3x1080 then 1440 then 3x1440.

Jump to 1440. Far better then 3x1080.

Vote for 1440p, I have one, haven't had Eyefinity but sounds like it can't be that useful. I do have 4x 1080p monitors at work...

1440p and get a side monitor for multitasking (can be a 1080p side monitor).

I vote 1440 and the 1080 as side-monitor. I've been running 3x1080 for some time now, and I only occasionaly play in eyefinity.
