Need help

Hello all, this is my first post.

I just built my first pc and I play games like bf2 and css.
Anyways, I recently purchased a sapphire radeon x1600 512mb pci-e graphics card. When I play bf2, just about everything is edgy'd lines. At the time I didnt know much about video cards but I bought the best one for the money I had.

I wanna OC'it but don't really know how. I downloaded ati tool tray and all things just went wrong there so I need some help.

Specs: AMD athlon 3400+, 2x512mb of ram, some kinda asus mobo , 350watt power supply :/

Go with small, small steps.

I learned from this document however I'd stay away from the part that refers to finding the max clock or memory frequency as each one crashed my system in no time.

Bringing the clock and memory frequency up by 5-7mhz increments has given me a clock speed of 600 and 470 for memory.

http://www.techpowerup.com/wiki/doku.php/atitool/start

Nice handle by the way. Happy Wintereenmas!

thanks for the reply.
Idk if this helps any but ATI tool sets the default at 499.50core/292.50memory, in my catalyst control center i have everything set to quality, v-sync is off, and AA=6x, AF=16x..

Im running on a Benq 19inch widescreen and the res is 1440x900, i set the bf2 res properties to 1440x900 (same res) and still get so many jaged edges.

I am really fed up with this card. I'm doing something wrong, i don't really know but stock is 500/300-im up to 573/292 and average fps on ati tool is 80.

BF2 is still an ugly game. If there is anything I should tweak in CCC please let me know.

I haven't made the jump to an LCD monitor yet but I hear that native resolution can play a big part in how things look. If your monitor is not running in its native resolution ie. the resolution it was essentially made for then you can run into quality issues.

Since I have only used ATI Tool to overclock my card I'm not sure what options are in Catalyst Control Center. I find ATI Tool to be less confusing. You can grab it from here: http://www.overclock.net/downloads/1...s-1-2-6-a.html. It's all personal preference but again, I find this one easier to deal with plus it doesn't eat up as much resources.

ATI Tool settings:
You may want to consider checking the box in the X1000 Overclocking menu to enable finer clock stepping granularity. This will allow you to increase the frequency in smaller increments.

Temperature is another big issue. I have mine set to attempt to keep the temperature at 80 degrees. You may want to set the fan to run 100% in case the ambient temperature of your room is higher than mine which is quite possible. Cooler is better. This can be accessed in the fan control menu.

All of the other settings I have left alone.

Again, small steps starting with the core. I'd recommend 5mhz increments. Move it up, hit set clock, move it up again, hit set clock and continue this. Make a note of the last frequency you hit because when you go too high you'll probably have to restart. When you do take it up below the frequency that caused the crash. Run an artifact scan on it for 5-10 minutes and if everything checks out, begin doing the same with the memory.

I've been messing with mine for the last three days trying to squeeze the last bit of juice out of this card. Just ask my fiance. Hehehe.

In the mean time I'm going to grab the newest driver and Control Center and see how that treats me. You may want to make sure that your drivers are up to date too. Once I have everything installed I'll see if there is another setting that can be changed.

If I were gaming I'd go with 4ms or lower but that's just a personal preference. I'll stick with CRT for now though. Cheap but still gives a nice clean image.

Anyway, did you make any progress?

6x AA & 16 x AF is pushing it a bit for that card IMO.............I may be wrong though

And I think you may have the card running in 2d mode as those clocks should be a little higher. I think the Memory should be at 650ish or 1300 effective
