Thinking of purchasing a 19" widescreen, dont want anything bigger due to lack of space and cost I was lookin at an asus.

* Manufacturer: Asus
* Type: LCD
* Screen Size: 19"
* Pitch Size: 0.285mm
* Input: 1 x Audio Line-In and 1 x D-Sub
* TV Tuner: No
* Resolution: 1440x900
* Viewing Angle: 160/160 (°H/°V)
* Contrast Ratio: 800:1
* Speakers: Yes
* Response Time: 5 ms
* Brightness: 330 cd/m2
* Power Usage (Switched on): 46 W
* VESA: No
* Widescreen: Yes
* Monitor Colour: Black
* Dimensions (with stand): 458 x 368 x 207 mm (WxHxD)

My brother was telling me I should get one with a contrast ratio of 2000:1 is this necessary?

No. 800:1 is good enough. 2000:1 is very rare. Unless you want to spend an extra $100 or so...it is unnecessary.
