R9 290 vs 770/780?

Thread Starter
What is the best card atm if I am looking to overclock?

I swapped from a 5770 to a 670 a while back and I am looking to sell my card now. I definitely like Nvidia drivers more - I don't know if AMD has improved since then.

ehh the 290 has similar performance to a 780 for cheaper. Once overclocked both cards trade blows in games! Its up to you man I would say go with whats available and most convenient for you!

not quite...

the r9-290 is generally a better performer, even with the 780 under assorted overclocks... if anything the r9-290 at stock competes a little closer with the titan that the 780... when overclocked with the non-stock cooler the 290 generally paces or beats the 780, depending on the cooler mostly.

throw in the outstanding performance in xfire and at huge definitions as well as the lower price and i'd call it nearly a clean sweep for the 290. That said i did use the word "nearly". the big elephant in the room is the stock cooler on the 290. It sucks, and if we're comparing a non-stock 780 vs the reference cooled 290 then the 780 is a better card.

So this is the short answer.

If you replace the 290's reference cooler, then the 290 is the better card.
If you don't replace the reference cooler and money is no issue then the 780 is a better card.

780 for stability sake. I had a Zotac 770 Factory OC'ed and switched to R9 290 recently. Nothing but random black screen issues.

id go for the 780 if priced the same or wait till the better cooled 290's come out - soon to come thumb.gif

There is that extra GB of ram to think about as well biggrin.gif
