[TPU] SAPPHIRE Announces the Radeon R9 290X/290 Tri-X Graphics Cards - Page 42

Just done with all the single card loops.

Ambient is 25°C, i pointed it out on page 19. All other temps were taken from the GPU-Z log files. Fan is set at 70% for all runs.
Heaven settings:

Worth noting is the fact I saw an artifact on transition between scenes 24 and 25 at 1150
So I'll probably run mine at 1100 with the fans a lil slower.

Anyway here goes:

Core 1040MHz / Mem 1300MHz (Stock clocks)

Max GPU temp: 63°C
Max VRM1 temp: 61°C
Max VRM2 temp: 43°C

Core 1100MHz / Mem 1450MHz

Max GPU temp: 66°C
Max VRM1 temp: 64°C
Max VRM2 temp: 45°C

Core 1150MHz / Mem 1450MHz

Max GPU temp: 69°C
Max VRM1 temp: 66°C
Max VRM2 temp: 46°C

But yeah as I got artifacts at 1150, I'm not gonna run the CrossFire setup at that speed for long, hell I won't even bench it at that speed if I get artifacts during the 30m of demo.

Started demo for 30mins at stock, benched it (run takes 260ish secs), exited and immediately adjusted clocks under Afterburner to 1100/1450 (raised power limit to +20%, didn't touch voltage).
Ran demo for 30mins again, benched it. Set clocks at 1150/1450, this time added +13mV (max possible it would seem as I tried to add +15 but it auto-adjusted to +13, and I wasn't about to reboot to enable the "extend official oc limit" option in the settings).
Ran demo for 20mins or so this time as the VRM temps didn't go up anymore after 15mins, gave it another 5 anyway just for the sake of it. Then I benched it.

Just installed the second card, redid a clean install of the drivers coz you never know and ofc I had to reconfig my desktop icons all over again (part I hate the most about benching GFX cards rolleyes.gif ).
Gonna run the demo for 30min now before i start benching the cards at stock (idk why I forgot it in my list earlier) with the fans at 70% again.

If you want me to run Heaven again with different voltage settings, just say so, I'll adjust in between runs.

Oh and before I forget.

Hynix again thumb.gif

Great great! thanks alot.

Push the card to its max oc it to limits, use 1.25v and 1.35v for the runs with 50% power limit and 80% fans this time, sorry for many requests redface.gif

Yeah I'll go for max oc once I'm done with the last run. 80% fans kinda is noisy though rolleyes.gif
What I can say already is that the fact there isn't much space between the 2 cards on this mobo really impacted VRM temps. Didn't expect them to go that high that fast. Probably will try not to hit 95°C when I go for max OC tongue.gif

Edit:

Vapor-X, I know you've been stalking this thread, could you please tell us what temps are the VRM rated up to?
I'd really appreciate it (and I'm sure others would too) coz even though I can easily afford it, I would be real mad if I were to kill my brand new cards so early.

Definitely not going for max OC right now, gonna wait some time to see if Vapor-X can answer my Q first.

Anyway, here are the CF results. As stated above, there isn't much space in between the 2 cards which is why the temps went up like crazy.

CrossFire - Core 1040MHz / Mem 1300MHz (Stock clocks)

Max GPU temp: 73°C
Max VRM1 temp: 78°C
Max VRM2 temp: 58°C

CrossFire - Core 1100MHz / Mem 1450MHz

Max GPU temp: 78°C
Max VRM1 temp: 85°C
Max VRM2 temp: 62°C
Power limit: +20%
Core voltage: +8mV

CrossFire - Core 1150MHz / Mem 1450MHz

Max GPU temp: 85°C
Max VRM1 temp: 99°C
Max VRM2 temp: 66°C
Power limit: +50%
Core voltage: +75mV Please note I kinda went crazy on the voltage right there which clearly impacted the VRM temps

Clearly them VRMs have trouble handling the huge offset in core voltage, and clearly I didn't need to push it so high to have the cards stable at these clocks. 30mV probably would have done the trick. But since it's just a guess on my part, I'll run another test tonight to try and find exactly how much more voltage I need to pump to have them stable at said clocks.
For now it's 6am here and since I gotta be at my best tonight, I think I'm going to head to bed for a well deserved nap.

If you guys got more requests (maybe some games or furmark or occt), don't hesitate to ask. Only thing I can't (won't) do is 3DMark coz I refuse to buy a license for the latest version. I can do 3DMark11 if need be, but no FireStrike.

Volts are not issue bro, don worry. You applied only 75 mV + its nothing. Problem being the top card is sucking the hot air from the bottom card. You can disable CF, repeat the test and see what the temps will look like.

One user on OCN had 1.4v pushed with fans at 70% and vrm was at 89c max after 30 mins loop so its all good bro relax thumb.gif

VRM are rated at around 120-150c, but i wouldn't go over 90c.

I think what matters is if I can cook macaroni over them, certainly more important than any unstable frame rates that surface as a result of it.
