Why a nice GPU? He said future proof. Did you miss that? CGI editing IS video editing. I should know because my cousin is in school for it and I've watched him do it. Thanks. Why do all the video editing labs at my College have quadros? Waste of money you say....

Oh so now let's buy a Mac driveless so that they cant install the OS, ask them to ship the OS not installed and then add the drives ourselves, most likely voiding the warranty. Good plan. Especially for a church.

Why two optical drives? He said the church is massive and they do tons of editing. What about if they decide to pass out copies of a movie and they need to make 500? Burn two at a time my way. Very cheap upgrade anyways. Not a factor in the over-budget Mac.

Who's the moron?

4x 500GB Seagate drives (get them off Newegg for cheap, substitute 750GB drives, take the 160GB drive home and keep it)
X1900XT (Great for Apple Motion)
30" Apple Cinema Display
Final Cut Studio

Under 9k. You will not outclass that build. I will assure you.
Hey! I didn't know Steve Jobs was a member on OCN!

Edit: Oh, and for future reference, I am the moron. At least thats what people tell me.

we have thought this over many many times at my church and every time we do it it seems like a PC would be the better choice. we have a guy that does the main video editing who owns a business in which he does video editing and he says that he likes using a PC with avid better. he is the main person who we all learn just about everything from so i think i would have a hard time getting them to get a MAC but if it would really be worth going mac then i guess i could try but it won't be easy and if it turns out that the mac is over budget and the PC isn't... then we will have to go with a PC

You are. The Mac comes w/ a 160GB drive, so you can expand normally. You won't void the warranty doing that.

Re: the Quadro: This is video editing, not heavy Maya/Shake production. A Quadro is a complete waste of money.

And teh drives? No application can burn 2 discs at a time, even on Windows.

*sigh*

Then throw Windows on it. The hardware is still cheaper.

You're saying you cannot burn two disks at one time? I've done it multiple times. I used to burn two CD's at once on my old P3.

You say the hardware is cheaper going with the Mac? I guess you missed the last 2 pages.

You say windows now? Tack that onto the already over-budget Mac's price.

Do yourself a favor and do what I said. Visit the numerous sites online that offer custom workstations. Get some ideas for builds and run them by the guy you know who does video editing.

Like I said, it will be a better resource than some of the people on here who will simply recommend the most expensive product without knowing a thing about it. Especially considering how many have never used it or who have never even done video editing.
