webpage for a gameserver

Thread Starter
I'm working on a webpage for a gameserver for some friends and I. And I was wondering if some of these things are possible to do and if they are a smaple code would be much appreciated.

First is we plan on having a Teamspeak3 server, Team Fortress 2 server, and a minecraft server running and I am unsure if we could have a webpage that would redirect the clients to my server at my house. I only ask this because I don't want to put my IP out to the world if it can be avoided.

Secondly I know that you can use dropbox to host webpages and was wondering if there is anything special that has to be down in the code for it to work.

I understand the basics of html and I'm using web expressions to design the website if any more information is need I'll gladly answer. Thanks in advance

I just wanted to jump in and say, by very nature of being on the Internet, your IP is already "out to the world". In fact, there is no security issue in itself with your public IP being visible to others on the Internet.

So feel free to run a website from your home server smile.gif

It is true that the IP is not private and exposing his IP is not a security risk, but please don't tell him that there is no extra security risk with running a web server out of his home. His IP is public, but an inexperienced person setting up a web server is more than likely not going to have the system anywhere near secure and opens their server and internal network up to all kinds of security risks. For all you know he is running the web server on his main computer with all kinds of personal data on there.

To OP: Not sure about hosting web pages on Dropbox. You can setup the server you want and run it pretty cheap on Amazon EC2. I have a minecraft server setup for my daughter on a free EC2 instance. It won't support a lot of simultaneous users, but it works. For a few $ a month, you could probably have everything you mentioned up and running pretty easily without exposing yourself to any risk. If you really want to run a server from your home, just make sure it is on its own machine and maybe start with a fairly secure "server" linux distro like centOS or debian. They will give you a more secure starting point, but you will still need to do your homework and do your own hardening of the server.

I know its not the greatest stuff but have you just thought of using enjin? It has most the features your looking for and is pretty cheap.

I have a dedicated machine that will before the webhosting, minecraft, tf2, and teamspeak3 server. There's no personal info on the machine either. And I'm trying to do this without having to pay money if I can. Some of the people involved are not the most reliable and it would fall onto me to have to pay for everything.

To Glakr: Thanks for the info by the way. right now there's about 4-5 people on the server but I'm trying to get it increased to 10-15 and be able to have most if not all on at the same time so I don't think the amazon ec2 would work for my problems. But if you have anymore ideas would love to hear them.

The server if running on a:
AMD FX-6300K at stock clock
8gb of ram(looking to upgrade it to 32gb)
500gb hdd

minecraft server is run on a 3gb ramdisk and periodically runs backups

our internet speeds are on avg 60mbps down and 15mbps up.

I think I understand what you mean OP, correct me if I'm wrong though.

You could set up a free domain name at DynDNS and tie your IP to it.
Just make a free account, go to "My Hosts" -> Add new host and follow the steps for a free hostname.
Afterward enter your newly created hostname and make sure it is set as "Host with IP address" and enter your IP address.

That way, rather than sending everyone to your webserver at 123.456.78.9, you can send them to http://mydomain.dyndns.org for example. That way you don't have to give your IP to everyone.

That's what I do with mine.
ZOMG I KNOW YOUR IP!!!! YOU NEED TO CENSOR YOUR IMAGE BETTER!!@!#!@#!

=D But as people have said above... its not a problem. One thing to watch out for is if you have a static IP. If your public IP is dynamic, then it wont work until you tell everyone the new IP.

As for security, in short your router has a firewall with everything ignored. I could Ping your router, but i couldn't ping your computer. When you start directing the ports to computers thats when you open yourself up to potential vulnerabilities. For the most part, if this is something for a bunch of friends, it shouldn't be an issue.

You're not static unless you've paid for it. My IP hasn't changed for years either with comcast, but since my router is only off for minutes, the DHCP lease doesn't expire. Comcast's dhcp lease is 3 days, so I would have to disconnect for a week before I would get a new IP.
