Homemade heatsink

Was wondering if anyone has gotten their hands dirty and built their own processor heatsink? Anyone experimented with silver (or some other high thermal transfer metal) instead of copper and aluminum?

Will be making a custom case from the ground up, and was thinking about utilitizing the extra space with a custom HS assembly to max the airflow further.

Anyone?

I know alot of people that makes custom waterblocks with some silver in it and mostly copper but I don't think many people makes air coolers. If you get an air cooler will some silver in it, it will definitely cool alot better then just copper

silver is only 4% or so better then copper at conducting so it doesnt pay unless your really loaded

Sis is a jeweler, so silver stock is readily available. But silver doesn't cost that much anyway.

Interesting thing is there is some new silver on the market, sis has been using it some, and unlike regular silver it doesn't tarnish as bad (it's also more of a pain to work with -- higher melting point). It's much more expensive and limited to sizing stock and small plate, but it's unique enough to test. It looks like a cross between white gold and platinum, silver has a more grayish tone.

Since thermal compounds love using silver, a silver-to-silver contact would make cooling even colder. The chemistry would be 1:1 (and using that new silver and making your own thermal compound, more so).

As for plans, I have no designs drawn up yet (working on a case design first, and addressing the cooling problem I see in almost every single case), but thinking of first experimenting with replacing the copper from an existing heatsink and going from there (testing plate thickness; varieties of silver and maybe some other metal [sis suggested even trying gold]).

See others try interesting things with copper, but copper isn't the most efficient carrier of heat, and in OC'ing and plain cooling, we seek the best thermal solution available (it's cheaper than water anyway).

gold is bad in transfering heat dont use it .
for your case design i suggest u find a way to keep the power supply away from the cpu ,no need for the extra heat coming from it .

Silver works better. Gold is the best heat reflector, but not a very good heat conductor. Silver is your best bet, other than diamond.

What are you going to use for heatpipes, if you want to get a sick cooler, i suggest looking into them one way or another

That's something more to study. Haven't really delved into heatpipes on the tech side yet, largely because I'm studying more on TIM compounds, especially silver and boron ratios.

Trying to teach sis some on hardware to help, largely because she won't let me touch her tools anymore (especially after what I did to her diamond file...it w-a-s effective on a quartz, r-o-c-k). :x

As for the location of the PSU: this custom case will have z-e-r-o problems with airflow....hehehe. Self-cleaning, too!
