At + .010, it finally ran Prime95 for more than 2 minutes .
At about 5 minutes I got this data ->
Doesn't look good .

See if you can hit 4.5Ghz at 1.40v.

On X79 the effective Vcore at offset of 0.0v is determined by Asus. So keep the offset at +0.010v and set multi to x45. If you do get into the CPUz with Prime95 load, youll see the Vcore maybe 1.38v or more eventhough the offset is still the same.

Basically the VID is deteremined by the Multiplier, so at offset 0v, changing multipler will change the base (VID) Vcore.

But sadly, doesnt look too good. Even worse than my chip.

Since I am able to return it to NewEgg, I think I will .
The temps are already at 75 C .
The fans increased speed by 20 or 30 percent I guess .
Normally I ca hardly hear them - during P95 stress, I can hear them but not too loud .
If I can get a chip that I can do 4.4 as I did with my 4820 on the Dell Aurora R4, I will be very happy . When running games or even P95 stress, the fans increased a little but the sound change was barely noticeable .
That is what I would like to achieve with the 4930 .
Otherwise, I think I will stay down to 4.3 or even 4.2 as I am with this chip .At 4.2, there is no fan increase .
To me, it does not seem worth it to have extra heat, power consumption and dust buildup from the fan speed increase, just to get .2 GHz faster CPU .
If I lived in Virginia then I might welcome the heat , but here in Florida, less heat is almost always better .
If the new chip does 4.3 without speeding up the fans much then I guess it will be worth the RMA hassle .
I am assuming that the replacement will be a new CPU, not a refurb .

Thanks a lot for your help . I learned something .
I am still confused about the Turbo Mode though .
It is turned on by default and was on during the tests that I just did .
However, my current settings with the FSB at 175, the Turbo Mode is disabled and if I turn it on then I get mayhem . I don't know why .

I think you had a momentary bad pixel where that period is . arrowheadsmiley.png
Unless you are viewing a CRT, then it must have been an electron gun misfire, or extreme EMI perturbation .

I'd try exchanging it, and I agree on the consumption part, mainly because of heat output. Unless you have an ac nearby, I'd try to undervolt as much as possible for 24/7 use.
That's what I do unless I try to run benchmarks for hwbot.org.

I normally fold and mine, and it requires optimizing consumption/performance as much as possible for it to be worth it (and to bear with it!)

if youre expecting to get another chip that will make your fans run slower youre wasting your time. core temp =/= heat output. the only difference is the coolers ability to remove that heat from the die. a new 4930k is going to output the same heat as the one you have now and its going to cost you 15% restocking fee to find that out because newegg most likely will not replace the CPU because you dont like how hot it is running with an overclock.

BTW my 3820 runs those same temps at 4.3ghz during summer time weather.

The name calling isn't what I'm worried about. The privacy reading a good 100 of my posts for now good reason is what's bothering me.
