Hello Overclockers!

Which chipset is better, AMD's 970 or Intel's X58?

I'm looking to upgrade my motherboard from the ASUS Rampage III Formula to the ASUS M5A97 R2.0 and I was wondering what the performance difference is, game wise.

My current setup
mobo: rampage iii formula
cpu: intel i7 920

looking to purchase
mobo: asus m5A97 R2.0
cpu: amd fx 8320

The reason I'm looking to upgrade is that I'm having issues with my Samsung 840 EVO SSD. I'm getting half the speed that the SSD should do. I've built a computer for my cousin last month that had the m5a97 mobo, the fx 8320, and the 840 EVO SSD and they work awesome together. I've uploaded a Youtube video that shows how fast it boots and shuts down - 2 sec shutdown, 1 sec shutdown

boot up on mine is slow. i got sata 3 chip set on mine. it takes longer to load up with it on then off. x58 is a slow booter. only have to deal with booting up a few times a day and i hit the power buttion and with bios load up it takes ~ 10-15 sec to windows. so i dont care. also you mite not see the diffence in sata 3 over sata 2 .

are you overclocking the cpu. i noticed that mine in bf4 need overclock or ht on to stop the hickups in the game.

I think the 920 = 8320. i would wait till ddr4 is out the make a buy. i had ddr1 then ddr2 8400 then jumped to 920 ddr3 holding off (if i can ) till ddr4.

also mite add my pc has usb3.0

i had mega cooler on mine with low speed fans , was cooled @ 70 deg @ 4 ghz. gave it to my buddy still rocken. t.r.u.e. or other high end coolers dose the 920 good. have the v8 cooler on it i could get 4 ghz out of it but temp was in 80 degs. thats was with 1.35 volts? 1.42 @ 4.2 ghz was to much for v8. but the mega held it nicely , I got water now @ 4 ghz @ 1.3 volts prime 95 (running now) 60 degs on a 480 mm rad but only 3 fans and gpu in loop.

no 920 are a heater box thats why you need a great cooler. it would be cheaper for ya to get a new mobo and cooler then to get amd cpu and mobo. also if you want a guy on here is selling a 920 for 50$ that way you can have 2 rigs

cooler i had not made anymore but same as Prolimatech PRO-MGH-C Megahalems Revision C CPU Cooler is 59.99 (needs 2 120 mm fan or a single one). or all black is 69.99

this is the fan i dont recommend thos as you cant hear them but dose not push alot of air.

This looks good = to gt1850 but gts are hard to find now

It's cheaper to get the new ASUS mobo and the amd cpu. The fx 8320 is actually faster and better than the 920. Please refer to this link The total cost for the cpu+mobo replacement is $250.

I'll end up with a faster CPU that produces less heat, requires less watts, and overclocks better.. more bang for my buck. The mobo has 6x native 6GB/s SATA ports. Whereas my Rampage mobo has 2 buggy ones bcz of the Marvell controller.

My only concern is the northbridge chipset and how that affects performance and whether it would bottleneck my system. Since the SSD is running at half its actual speeds and I honestly don't see any performance gains over my WD black HDD, it makes a lot of sense to go with the AMD/ASUS upgrade whether the northbridge chipset will bottleneck my system or not.

@GfhTattoo You're right about the 920 being a heater box. The 920 raises the PC room 10c degrees. I have the AC unit right above me and it's still unbearable during the summer. I'd rather get rid of the 920 ASAP lol.

Well what do you do with pc.

4770 k with asrock mobo is 350 and 4670k is 300. both beat out amd.

If i where you i sit and wait. ddr4 is comeing just hate to spent 300+ and have ddr4 come out 6 months after with new cpu dies.

Im waiting on the new ddr4 as ddr1 i had like 4 pcs ddr2 like 6 , and now ddr3 1....... now waiting on the new stuff. pci-3.0 usb the new one and all that(not usb 3.0)

I would over clock the cpu and save up. but amd is not that bad @ stock both the cpu are = just getting amd for sata 3 is pointless in my book but its always fun playing with new toys

have fun anyways,,,,, btw power is eatten up both on same thats why i say intel 4770k or used 2500k ( good tim and dont have to delid

I'm not in a rush to get anything. The 920 is still running like a champ after all the abuse it's taken. If ddr4 stuff is coming out in about 6 months only, I'm definitely going to wait. I'm just tired of Intel leaving me in the dust with their new lineups going out every quarter. I spend a lot of money back in the day for the Rampage 3 Mobo that I thought will be able to handle a future CPU upgrade. It turns out Intel dumped the LGA1366 and I'm forced to get a new mobo as well. On the other hand, you have AMD that have been using the AM3+ for a while now and seems more future/upgrade proof. As for what I use my PC for, well I use it for work and pleasure. I'm a designer and I mainly use it for photoshop, rhino5, illustrator, and gaming. I also do some occasional HD video recording & editing.

AM3+ is on its last legs dont expect newer stuff to be coming to it like clockwork. Plus X58 has a lot of features already and the 970 isn't anything to really phone home about. Just get a legit cooling system and oc that 920 like mad ... you wont be missing much.

@Overkill, that's exactly what I wanted to know! btw, is that a 1988 VW Golf? It was my first car and it can take a lot of abuse. I have nothing but great memories with it. I used it as an off-road rally car, as well for drag racing with my friends.. boy, years fly by.

Thank you for all your comments. I've decided to wait till newer tech comes out.

Cheers!
