[Build Log] - i7 4930k, SLI 780 Ti, Asus Black Ed., 64gb DDR3-2400, RAID'd 840 Pros, Custom Water Loop

I have decided to sell my current X58/i7-920 build and get my new X79 build started immediately. The purpose of this machine will be a mixed bag of running a better security testing lab (with several VMs), running my trading/charting software, doing some video editing, and of course, occasional gaming.

This build is being done in two stages, the first of which was just ordered today. I will do the second stage in Q1 2014, but an H100i will hold me over with at least some water cooling until then --

Stage 1 - Essentials - Done
  • Corsair 750D
  • Corsair AX860
  • Corsair H100i
  • Asus DVD-RW
  • Asus Rampage IV Black Edition
  • Asus GTX 780 Ti 3GB
  • Intel Core i7-4930K (3.4Ghz 6-core)
  • G.SKILL Trident X 32GB (4x8) DDR3-2400
  • Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD
  • Lamptron FC5V3 6-channel Fan Controller

Stage 2 - Luxuries & final touches - Waiting
  • 2nd GTX 780 Ti 3GB (for SLI)
  • 2nd 32GB (4x8) DDR3-2400 (for 64GB total)
  • 2nd 840 Pro 512GB SSD (for RAID)
  • Custom water loop cooling the CPU, GPUs, motherboard, and perhaps RAM (Details TBD)
  • Corsair red sleeved PSU cables
  • Corsair AX1200 to replace the AX860 (I decided this is necessary)
  • Corsair 900D to replace the 750D (TBD if needed, but hopefully not)
  • Some fancy red lighting

The intended result
  • OC'd i7-4930k (mild and stable, but hopefully above 4.2Ghz)
  • 2x GTX 780 Ti's in SLI
  • 64GB DDR3-2400
  • Custom water loop w/ red color theme
  • Existing 3x 24" monitor array I already have
  • Existing 4TB external drive I already have

For the general look and feel of the build, my style is roughly along the lines of this Google result I found a little while back. I think the machine actually belongs to an OCN forum member, so hats off to whoever that is!

Thanks for following the build. Any input you guys have would be appreciated. I am all ears - especially on doing a smart cooling setup. Subscribe!

sub'd. Looking for ideas on an upcoming build.

I too am building in phases. Phase I gets me up and running on air and Phase II will be additional upgrades and include WC. My CFO (wife) gave me the "look" when I asked for $5k to drop on a new rig and some upgrades (new 1440p monitor). 2 phased approach makes it a little more palatable.

edit: if Stage 2 is in Q1, why not get the AX1200 now versus later? Will you use the other PSU in another build?

Thanks! The phased approach is much nicer on the wallet indeed. I get mixed feedback on whether or not the 860 will cut it for me. Some say it will be plenty, some don't. I'd like to stick with the 860 if I can help it, but I won't throw out the possibility of upgrading if I need to for some reason. If I upgrade, I'll just have to sell the 860.

Thank you! I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully the parts get here by the weekend... that would make for a fun weekend of building stage 1!

Shipping update:

Now is when the torture and anxiety really begins. I have the tracking numbers now! If I hit refresh over and over it makes the parts show up faster, right?

GPU, SSD, RAM -- Estimated delivery Friday 12/27
Mobo, PSU, CPU, H100i -- Tracking number active but no details on UPS yet. Newegg.com, however, says 1/02 delivery date. This better not be accurate!!
Case -- Estimated delivery Thursday 12/26
Fan controller -- Estimated delivery Monday 12/30
DVDRW -- Estimated delivery Saturday 12/28

I got 2 day shipping and rush processing with everything, so I hope to be posting build pictures by Friday!
