AMD Quad FX Hits Retail - Page 6

Nope. I was not entirely serious about that being a real option. Only showing that AMD already has Octal Core solutions.

Nice for servers, but heck, a mobo of like $1700???

The Clovertons will come out on top... pretty sure of that. The architecture just has the upper hand.

This will be lost on the AMD Fanboys methinks though.

Right. So the question is, why the heck is everyone comparing the two? That and it's the "new vs. old tech." fallacy.

Depends on the application.. In floating point, theres some interesting comparison here..

http://www.spec.org/cpu2000/results/...030-07835.html
2 Clovertowns's get a score of 104..

http://www.spec.org/cpu2000/results/...016-07636.html
4 Opterons get a score of 119.

very interesting... what about for a video editing machine? i wonder which one would be faster...
Well, I was just reading an article from Anand, and I sort of see what he means by "needing" 4 cores. There will be a very, very, very long time before anyone will really have the "need" for 4 cores, as there are barely a few handful of apps that are optimized for dual cores.

Multi-cores will be for those that multi-task like hell and don't have time to wait, me on the other hand? Not really interested in Quad Cores from either platform, they're expensive and I don't really multi-task at all.

FSB does matter, hence why an Opteron clocked at 2.7Ghz beats a 2.8Ghz FX62 hands down. In 2 of 3 CPU tests in Everest my Opteron with 337 FSB beats the X6800 by a hair, I'll call it even. If you read overclocking guides, they would tell you that a CPU with higher FSB would perform similar to a CPU with lower FSB but higher clock.

The difference between Netburst and K8 is much greater than that between K8 and Conroe. In K8 chips, increasing the FSB makes a great difference.

The bandwidth does matter in games, I remember seeing a AM2 versus S939 review some time ago where they basically compared DDR and DDR2, and the difference is more like 20% but not 5%.

Let's just talk about the platform instead......

I agree. Voice recognition, holography etc. comes to mind for the future. At this point, two cores are enough for a desktop environment.

Technology can't sit idly by as they need us to pay for R&D and the only way to do this is to continue with new hardware, convince us that we need it ad infinitum, ad nauseam....
