If I didn't get mine for cheap I would of never gotten it. I laugh at Intel's "affordable" 6 and 8 cores. Out side of CAD - production professional work its an absolute waste of money. For any gamer buying any of these is the equivalent of throwing money in the trash. You're far better off spending the extra $200 - $400 on a better gpu, ssd, cpu cooler, keyboard, or games. Pretty much anything.

Completely different experience to me, comparing a somewhat faulty 2.8Ghz Phenom II tri-core to a 2.66Ghz Core 2 Duo dual-core when I was mucking around with them had the Phenom II utterly destroying the Core 2 in gaming..I agree 8 cores is overkill for gaming, but 4 threads (ie. 2 Cores + HT, 2 modules, 4 cores, whatever) is what's really required unless you're happy to upgrade in a year or two or have a CPU bottleneck.

(Plus, for the most part you're going to be GPU bottlenecked at 1080p if you have a fairly recent tri/quad core or above anyway..)

They were not the very first desktop 6-core processors Intel ever released and by the time they did arrive the novelty of the hexa-core had begun to wear off. This will be the very first desktop octo-core ever released by Intel and they aren't going to want to render that very first (and sure to be very expensive) 8 core X chip irrelevant by offering another "first" octo-core chip just like it at half the price. Where then would they go for pricing on the 6-core? $350? What about the mainstream quad-core, will it then be $200? I just don't see it happening that way (or if it does, the 5930K will be much much more than the current 4930K sells for). Remember that when the first ever 6-core CPU came out (the 980X) it was several months before they released the "affordable" one (the 970 which wasn't even unlocked) and it was only $100 less, nothing at all like the bargain of today's 4930K.

Again, I hope I'm wrong and we all get cheap octo-cores in our rigs in time for Xmas but wishing for something doesn't necessarily make it true.

I reckon we'll end up having $600 Octo-Cores by Q2 2015, but not at launch. That's what Intel did with the i7 970/980X...That's also what they did with the Q6600 and QX6800. We had a $1000 and a $851 quad core at first with the Q6600 dropping to $500 or so after 4-5 months iirc. It makes sense because you'll still get people who would get an X version sooner rather than later simply because they want the performance.

I don't like that PCI-E 2.0 specification and I'm sceptical on it's single core performance. Might wait for refreshed version.

For what you do, maybe.

Anyone who has ever run more than a handful of applications simultaneously, ever transcoded a video or streamed, or ever compressed a large archive, even eight cores are easily utilized, and some of us do things far more demanding.

The i7 970 was sub-600 dollars about nine months after the release of the 980X, well before the release of Gulfotwn's successor (SB-E). Future CPUs followed those pricing tiers from the get go. Also, it didn't need to be unlocked, because LGA-1366 was well suited to BCLK OCing.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was some delay between the release of the 8-core X and the affordable 8-core K, but it's not likely to be nine months, and even if it was, it wouldn't change my arguments.

You mean the PCI-E 2.0 hanging off the PCH? Why would you need more? A PCI-E 3.0 specification for X99 would be a meaningless token. DMI 2.0 wouldn't support faster speeds anyway, and even if it did, what would you stick in a 1x or 4x 3.0 slot? Any GPU or ultra-high-end RIAD card is going to be best connected directly to the CPU (which has plenty of PCI-E 3.0 lanes).

Single core performance will be virtually identical to current Haswell processors, which means it will be the best single core performance you can get anywhere.

Single thread performance will be very close to normal haswell at the same clock, and you have 40 lanes of PCIe 3 supplied by the CPU, why are you complaining about extra pcie2 lanes on the PCH?
