Yea I will take AMD....

AMD's "8-core" competes with intel's gimped quad core (no hyperthreading) because the quad core with HT is 20% faster at encoding than both of them biggrin.gif

Given that clock for clock, 4c4t Haswell is basically neck and neck with 4c8t Piledriver..

When they bring out 8c/16t Haswell, it'll wreck both of them by 2x with no issues

Pretty much this.

Comparing the 8-core Visheras to Haswell-E 8c/16t is pretty much the same as comparing the 8-core jaguar CPUs in the consoles to Visheras.

With all cores utilized Vishera should be more than twice as fast as the sub 2.0ghz Jaguar chips. Just like how haswell-E 8c/16t should be more than twice as fast as the Vishera chips.

I think i'll hold onto my 3930k until next gen or at least until i can buy 10 core processor for around $600.
Besides games are only just starting to take advantage of multiple cores.

40 is so awesome. That gives you 32 lanes for Graphics, and 8 extra for Hi end audio,SSD's Etc. I am absolutely doing X-99 build .After feeling really burned by Intel with P-55,and then choosing Z77, over X-79 (at least better than P-55 ),I am done with mid-range chipsets. This is going to be unreal.

If I didn't get mine for cheap I would of never gotten it. I laugh at Intel's "affordable" 6 and 8 cores. Out side of CAD - production professional work its an absolute waste of money. For any gamer buying any of these is the equivalent of throwing money in the trash. You're far better off spending the extra $200 - $400 on a better gpu, ssd, cpu cooler, keyboard, or games. Pretty much anything.

Most past games dont use more than 2 cores. Some still did, though. Crysis 3 can definitely use more than 4, and BF4 is able to utilize 8 threads as well. The reason I am starting to want 8 cores is that these new consoles have the ability to process 8 threads (even if extremely slowly) and soon enough, game developers will begin coding most of their games to use more than 4 threads. Now, a 4Ghz i5 4c/4t will obviously be able to process a strict console game port that uses 8 threads just as fast as (and probably faster than) a 1.6Ghz 4c/8t Jaguar CPU that the consoles have. But for next-gen games that aren't strictly ports, games that use the PC as the lead platform or games where the PC version just has some extra goodies tacked on versus the console version, you might really benefit from a real 8 core running at 4Ghz+

Altogether it's going to be insanely expensive though... I certainly wont have that kinda money at launch as I'm just finishing college, but once I'm out and I've started working I wouldn't mind coughing up over $1K for it all if I have the money. The quad-channel DDR4 will be the most overpriced part for sure, and X99 mobos wont be cheap either. But 8 cores, 16 threads, quad-channel DDR4, 40 lanes of PCIe (with which I'd add a second 780 Ti to take advantage of...) that kinda computing power just makes me drool drool.gif

How many years have people been saying that for, though?

A pheonom x6 beats an 8320 in cineibench at same overclock. THATS SAD>

Amd CPU's have not advanced in 5 years.

Agreed but with dx12 and mantle it may actually happen however it is not really coding for as both are a better abstraction layer nothing more. If they can't do it right with dx12 or mantle then it is indeed poor coding or a game that actually needs the cpu even when used pretty optimal

It doesn't matter what people are saying. The existing hardware is what matters. It hasn't become common yet because gaming has been held back by last-gen consoles for a very long time. The vast majority of games were console-first and just ported to PC. Now the new consoles have 8 threat processing and developers would be stupid to not take advantage.

It's already happened, BF3 was well threaded, Crysis 3 was, BF4 definitely is.. All future frostbite games will follow suite, etc. don't forget mantle and dx12 are in infancy
