well for some games, going from 3.5 to 4.7ghz gives me like a 50fps improvement, it's kinda important to focus on percentage improvement, not really the actual FPS amount.

20fps improvement going 30fps to 50fps is 67% increase, but 20fps improvement going 100 to 120fps is only a 20% increase. Scaling is done more by %, as opposed to "they do 10 vs 30fps, or 100 vs 120fps" which can sound silly (3x faster at one point, 1.2x faster at another)

I'd consider the HSA apu's right now to be low end, given that the enthusiast platform next quarter will be easily ~3-4x faster for most relevant tasks if they can utilize the threads

Now that we will have 8 cores in the performance market I wonder how long it will take for them to reach the mainstream market. It's nice to see 8 cores finally start to break into the light.

I doubt many of us here care about base clocks. My 3930K has a base clock of 3.2GHz. Didn't stop it from going well over 5GHz. And there has never really been much (if any) difference between X and K OCing potential.

Consider the closest Xeon equivalent that we have, the E5-2687W v2 Ivy Bridge-EP. 3.4ghz base clock (4.0ghz max turbo), 150w, around $2,200.

Haswell-E is a new architecture, but it will still be on 22nm. So thermally, no miracles are going to happen.

Then consider that Haswell-E will most likely stay at 130w, not 150w like the Xeon.

Then consider that the highest-binned chips will be reserved for the 'X' variant, and quite possibly for the future Haswell-EP Xeons as well.

Where does that leave us? Probably with a "5930K" with a base clock around 3.0 ghz and a max boost of 3.6 ghz.

I think it's going to be a challenge to OC such a chip beyond 4.0 ghz using all 8 cores.

Thoughts?

Thats what they said with the 2.6ghz i7-920.

Im thining this 8 core will be around 3.33ghz

Worth noting that you'll likely lose performance if you take a significant hit to clock speeds in order to run 8c/16t instead of 4c/4t. It -is- much harder to cool such a large power difference and probably harder to clock quite as high too

Base clocks are pretty irrelevant for enthusiast overclockers - we're not hiding that 4770k can use like 200 watts when you're near volt limits for it. There are plenty of people that are fine pushing to 2-3x a listed "140w" TDP if the cores are clocked nowhere near their potential in order to achieve that kind of TDP rating. I don't think that buying a "5930k", "overclocking" it to 3.7ghz 24/7 and sitting there will really be a thing on OCN

This has all pretty much been said, but thread moving quite fast!

That's true Alatar, but does that mean I will automatically see a performance gain in apps and games moving from a 5.2Ghz capable 4-core 3770K to a 6-core 5820K?

Only if the 5820K is also a high clocker, right?

Otherwise I could actually see performance decreases right?

Yup, lower base clocks just mean that the OCing potential will go through the roof. These bigger chips are usually power limited at stock settings and temp limited when OC'd. Give the thing enough cooling and the OCing capabilities shouldn't differ much from normal haswell (or possibly haswell refresh).

Also on the subject of the i7 920. Best OCing headroom in the history of high end CPUs. 2.6ghz to 4.4ghz for the best samples. We have higher numbers these days but the extra potential on those 920s is unrivaled to this day.

In reality you will only see real performance advantages in apps that can use the extra cores.

I will most likely take a single core hit since my 4770K can bench 3dmark at ~5.5ghz on 24/7 cooling.

Ya back when i had mine at 4.0ghz with a HD 5970. Was a sweet system.

Clocking a Haswell 6/8 core to the ~4.8ghz it'd likely need to match performance in most games could be difficult (5.2ghz ivy bridge is not an everyday thing) and many games don't benefit in a real way from cache or memory performance - some do - but your most aggressive gains would be for stuff that utilizes more than 4 cores well, or for video encoding.

If you had 6 cores at like 4.8ghz, you could see up to ~50% gains for games like that, but for video encoding it would be higher as IPC gains are better (avx2 used etc)

In reality if you can make good use of 5+ cores, you probably want a 5+ core CPU. If you can't, your best bet is probably i5 clocked through the roof

These 8-cores will be encoding monsters, talking like 1.6x faster than a 3930k at same clocks and more than twice as fast as fx9590 or oc'd 4670k, if stuff holds up

If it's anything like a 3930k...Intel can have another 600$ from me. You can run 4.5GHZ without even putting pressure on the system. there will probably be a 5820 for around 300 and some change.
