AMD PC slowing down and also uninstall problem.

Thread Starter

Hi. My PC I bought from Walmart 3 years ago is starting to run slow. If I have it on for say an hour or so it begins to get really sluggish. I've run full Chkdsk on startup and also Defragmenter. Seems fine and I also can't find a virus. Now and then I hear a fan start to run pretty loud for a while. I opened it up and there was quite a bit of dust in it. It was on the floor, on carpet, in a studio Apt. with two cats. There are tiny feet so it had a little space to breath on bottom. I got pretty much all the dust out of it including the fans and now it's off the floor on a table. It gets slow for everything including Firefox and Explorer. Moving files, it moves them indefinitely and the same with deleting files from the Recycle Bin...it just gets stuck and I have to cancel it. Any idea what it could be. The hard drive maybe?

Also, when my PC starts, I get a error message saying "usbm.exe, Missing Component: Reinstall from the installer." and I have to click multiple messages to exit. What is that and how do I re/uninstall it? The usbm.exe file can be found at C:\Users\Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. I click it and nothing happens. What can I do?

Thank you for any help. My PC info can be read here: http://www.overclock.net/lists/display/view/id/3151101

Sounds like swollen cap syndrome to me. Open the case and check for swollen and/or leaking capacitors.

Backup data, wipe drive, re-install windows, update windows, check performance.

THEN start entertaining the possibility of hardware problems.

Also open Task Manager and see if anything is hogging the CPU time. You might find some background program or even a virus. Something in your startup folder sounds suspicious to me if you did not put it there.

I'm sorry, but thats rediculous. All that work, when its easy enough to open the case and look for swolen caps or run a HD/Memory scan. Completely not necessary.

Deverica Wolf was kind enough to take the time to fill out a lot of detailed system information. Had you taken the time to use that, you'd know there really aren't likely any electrolytic caps on his/her motherboard in a place that could have an effect on system performance. Furthermore, capacitor problems rarely present as a "performance" related problem. This is a far fetched direction to look in based on the symptoms.

The description given, is what sounds like a bloated, infected, self conflicted 3 year old windows install. You're thinking there is an "easier" solution to this problem than simply re-installing? You'd have to enjoy beating your head against a wall to want to go down that sort of road. I could install windows 5 times over in the time it will take to complete a "scan." Going down the "try to fix this install" path is an unknown that could lead to dozens of scans with lots of software taking days or weeks.

3 years is overdue by historical standards for the way most people use their Windows computers on the internet. What you are suggesting is the waste. The sooner he gets to the software re-installed clean the sooner he'll either have a working system, or can start looking for hardware problems. Until then, it's just pissing into the wind..

Thank you all for replying. I actually am still dealing with the problem but found how to avoid it thus I forgot about this thread. Opps. :sad-smile

Around the time the drive started slowing down I noticed that I had been watching lots of YouTube videos that I had downloaded to my drive. I thought maybe VLC was doing it because I read of the newest version at the time doing that to some people's drives so I went back to the prior version but it didn't help. In my Videos library I have a specific folder with videos, GIFs, and pictures. I then realized that the slowdown occurred whenever I was in the video folder and watched ANY videos or looked at ANY GIFs or pictures. If I stayed out of the folder, and looked at pictures and GIFs in my normal Downloads folder, I had no slowdown at all.

Once the slowdown begins, there is nothing I can do but wait for the very slow reboot to fix it. Has anyone ever heard of something like this before, where watching just one video or looking at just one GIF can slow down the whole computer? I've done several searches for a virus using Comodo but it's clean. Any help would be appreciated. :lmaosmile
