There is a lot of software out there that measures it with onboard sensors, like ATI Tray tools, Everest, Speedfan, ect. All those programs read your onboard temperature sensors to tell your your temps.

Motherboards usually have a sensor on it. GPU, CPU, chipsets have sensors built into them. Software just reads those.

You could use an infrared thermometer to do it manually with these

and beside it being kewl. do you see when it gets too high you shut down? what is too high? when you see its getting high is that an idication to just mod for more fans?

Well it depends on the CPU, different CPU's can get hotter then other sometimes but I stay away from the 50+ C range. And my computer is set to shut down at 80-90C range. And also, sometimes the temps are too high from an OC so then I just lower the overclock.
