Mineral oil gels at around 40-50F if I am not mistaken. You want to be REALLY careful about this. If it gels, your screwed.

What temps are you going to try to run? If you are going through all this trouble, why not just go full phase?

i havent specifically decided on a coolant, oil or some other specialty liquid. its more for looks/ just being cool. Something to do with spare parts.

the viscosity of the mineral oil is something that i have never liked about other setups i have seen, especially with air designed heat sinks and fans.

That is the best liquid and can be used without a heat sink. However, for best affect, i would use a heat sink.

Wow that is cool. Heatsink-less cooling with something that costs $300 a gallon. Pretty cool. Cant wait to see something on the lines of a 24/7 gaming rig.
wouldn't need a whole gallon of it though, and you could make a very thin system with it. Do an itx/760 mini with the lowest profile ram you can find. build a tank just thick enough to fit the ram so and mobo. connect the GPU with a mini connector so it lies flat against the board.

Fill area would be, say 6.7"x6"x1.2". the ram won't need heat spreaders after all, and the ports need to stick out of the fluid. Should be able to get 4 machines out of one gallon of fluid. More if you sculpt the tank a bit. That put's it in the range of high end CPU air coolers. Much cheaper than a cpu/gpu custom loop.

The problem with this liquid Novec 7000 is that it increases presure when it`s not cooled fast enough. This means it would escape through any little hole in this system. Funny when 300$ would just escape into air within some weeks. redface.gif
The guy in the video used a tec/peltier to cool the gas inside which would work i think but you would pobably need another power supply for it.
so pressure proof container is required then. Well that could get annoying. Getting into silicone gaskets on army surplus ammo boxes or something. Maybe get out the torch and weld up a tank. There go the cost savings. need a pressure check valve too to prevent explosions.

that or you could just do overkill cooling. Back to pumps then though.

obtanium solutions might include an old window AC system or something. They need to contain their coolant under pressure too. Maybe buy your local HVAC repair guy a drink and see what he thinks? If the object being cooled is hotter than the abmient cooler (outside air) an hvac system can work without a pump. That's how heat pipes do it. They can even do it hard enough to generate electricity. (see camping usb chargers) Need a hell of a heat gradient though. Like fire.

yeah but all of that has A) been done before and B) hard to do in an aesthetically pleasing way.

My design is more to be a different take on an already done design, and it is planned to look nice.

"eventually the netire air bath will become warm" air bath? you mean oil bath? yeah, hence the invention of radiators
" the oil still needs to transfer heat to the air" yup see above, they are called rads, and that would be why the coldest oil, coming from the rad, will be pumped onto the chips at a higher velocity, to have faster heat transfer.
