Best 939 Motherboard - Page 3

Thread Starter
How exactly is going with am2 future proofing? Other then ddr2 ram, I see no benefit unless the AMD 4x4 architecture is going to use am2. Correct me if i'm wrong, but quadcore amd cpu's don't use am2 but instead socket F. People are saying that 939 is going to be phased out. But so will am2. Unless you clearly point out to me or give me some proof that going with an am2 platform is worth it, I have no choice but to go with the cheaper of the two.

I say if you want good performance for the buck, definitely stick with 939. It's not like the parts are gonna disappear any time soon, despite what everyone else here seems to be saying. ANd it's also not like they will be obsolete as far as useability goes anytime soon. Unless you want the best, stick with 939!!!

n00b...AM2 pwns 939...go read a book...lol

If you are sticking to a budget go with 939...but you can build a decent AM2 system for 700......dont rule it out.... Gigabyte S series AM2 boards are cheap and good overclockers.

edit: you wont build a system for 700 that will run max settings at that high of a resolution...well..it will run it...at 5fps....I have way more than 700 in my system and it runs Gothic 3 at 1600x900 with settings maxed at 35fps...

edit again: Most of the newer AMD chips are going to be released for AM2, not to mention that the new 65nm AMD chips will run on AM2 platform.....proof enuf..

I'd just build a cheap conroe not unless you NEED an AMD. While I love my S939, the price to performance ratio is just killer with an OCed e6300. Check out the Intel Forums and ask chozart to build you a rig!

Chozart can hook you up big time....I have seen him turn many people away from AMD.... *sniff* I hate to see em go....

I'm holding onto my 939 socket for another year. There isn't a game out my Sandy wont play well. Having a quad core is a waste of money even if you are a mega-tasker which I'm not. A socket 939 dual core will run anything just fine if you multi-task. Get a Opteron 165 and you'll be fine. If all you do is game or surf, a single core is fine.
$75. AMD 3700 SanDiego E4 model- will best a Opteron 144 due to 11x multi.
$108. DFI Ultra D mobo.
$85. OCZ 520 psu / various other cheaper but not worth sacrificing.
$100-200: DDR Ram: PC4000, 4400 or 4800. Dont skimp here.
$45. Thermaltake Big Typhoon heatsink/fan

Case: old or new, added fans?
Harddrive: old or new
Optical DVD drive: old or new
Sound card optional
Operating system: old or new

This build can be cheap and last several years.
There's nothing it cant do that an AM2 can.
This setup should run easily at 2.9g or up and remain stable & cool.
Match that with a AM2 buck for buck.

look, his question was "what is the best 939 mobo?" so can we answer it already instead of saying "omglolznoob get a conroe" he wants to know the best 939 mobo. My opinion is the DFI lanparty expert...it comes w/ a tad more options than the normal lanparties

The Ultra D is a bit cheaper than the expert and isn't lacking in the bios option dept. (none that he'd truly miss).
The Expert is SLI and he said he wont run two cards.
The Ultra D's are not hard to set up and run when you keep it simple.
