HELP! Losing My Head! Mining Rig: R9 290 x 7 on Win 8.1, but not a single working one?!?

Hello,

I've been spending two almost sleepless nights doing this but I can't even get to step 1.

(My other rig with 2x 280X are running perfectly on Win7.)

---
MSI Z87-G45 (latest BIOS 1.6)

Intel G3420
2x 4GB Corsair Vengeance

4x Asus R9 290
3x Gigabyte R9 290

ONLY 1X connected to 1st PCIE 16 slot.

Windows 8.1
---

Step 1: Install from USB, Windows 8.1 Pro
Step 2: RunAsAdmin installs of all the mainboard drivers, RESTART
Step 3: RunAsAdmin install of 13.12 Catalyst, RESTART
Step 4: RunAsAdmin install of AMD APP SDK 2.9, RESTART.
Step 5: Run cgminer bat with:
-- cgminer.exe --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://stratum01.hashco.ws:8888 -u xxx -p xxx -I 13 2>testBat02.txt --temp-cutoff 92 --temp-target 85

Hardware errors everywhere.

And if I tried:
-- cgminer.exe --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://stratum01.hashco.ws:8888 -u xxx -p x -I 13 2>testBat.txt --vectors 1 --worksize 256 --lookup-gap 2 --thread-concurrency 32768 --gpu-engine 850 --gpu-fan 40-100 --gpu-memclock 1550 --gpu-powertune 20 --temp-cutoff 92 --temp-target 85 --gpu-threads 1

, it reports "Maximum buffer memory device 0 supports says 536870912 [2013-03-18 03:32:29] Your scrypt reports BLAH BLAH BLAH" and goes ape crazy and BSODs.

AT THIS POINT: I will reformat the drive and reinstall and start all over again, to make sure that no old drivers or registry entries are conflicting.

Tried switching drivers:
- 13.12
- 13.11-Bv9.5
- 13.1
... same results.

Tried switching cards... same results.
Tried switching BRANDS... same results.

Please help me..

Oh, and Happy New Year! I'm staying in and fixing this damned mess.. :-/

PS:
Also, can someone please confirm with me if:
1) R9 290 do NOT work with drivers below 13.11
2) Win 8.1 can only do 5 max GPUs

PPS:
I need to use CGWatcher and Teamviewer so I need Windows. frown.gif

Hi mate,

I have this board, and have 6 cards going.

I've had one hell of a time like you to get this going, so if it works for you, and you're happy, feel free to tip 13KPB3KqfHUSYVhBBSs47sLZdM9NTcJgBp

What you need to do is:

1) In BIOS, set PEG 1-3 to Gen2 - It's under Advanced and PCI

2) Install into all slots except for slot 4.

3) Use a wire to short the pins on Slot7 like this.

So that it all looks like this.

Picture of board slots

4) Use this... DDU Removal whilst in safe mode, to uninstall all the drivers you've installed so far.

5) Reinstall on reboot, this new working driver. https://www.dropbox.com/s/1hoxkz0y8fe933g/13-1_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql%20Working.exe

hi Vyker,

thank you so very much for the tips;

out of frustration I managed to exchange the board for a Asrock H81 Pro BTC hoping that it would be simpler since it was BUILT to do mining, so I can't test out your solution yet.

/ START RANT ABOUT THE Asrock H81 PRO BTC

(deleted: refer to http://www.overclock.net/t/1456912/2x-asrock-h81-pro-btc-fried-cant-be-swapped-mobo-wont-boot-help-mining-rig )

/ END RANT

Anyways, I am so angry that I might just wanna pick that Z87-G45 back up even if it costs SGD100 more, so that I can get started on mining... I have SIX R9 290 lying around doing nothing!!!!!!!!!

What cards are you running? Do those particular 13.1 drivers support the R9 290?

And how super-sure are you that this will work out? I don't think I can handle anymore slaps to the face like this, lol...

Or do you know what 6-slot board that are GOOD and can definitely work with my IntelG3420 and 6x R9 290 (each 850W PSU handles two cards)?

So in essence:
- Intel G3420
- 8GB Corsair Vengeance
- ???? Motherboard
- Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 (I need Cgminer and Cgwatcher)
- 6x R9 290
- Catalyst 13.??? (is it true its better to not install catalyst, and only updating the drivers manually? cuz that's what ive been doing)

Thanks mate!

If I understand his issue correctly, he can't even get 1 GPU running.

If using powered risers, there's an important thing to keep in mind (if using dual psu): plug the molex connectors on the risers to the psu powering the board and cpu. The gpu pci-e connectors go to the second psu.

Risers sometimes bend and don't work properly, watch for shorts and make sure no connector or adapter gets too hot while running.

To get more than 4 gpus to run I had to install 4, and then install a different catalyst version for the 5th.

HI Vyker,

I have a similar board. The Asrock Z87 K1ller. It has same Board Layout and same PCIex Slots. I am fighting right now with the raiser cables. Powered ones. I wanted to use at start 4x R9 280x. But until now I had no luck. With your posting I figured out to run one on a raiser cable with the PCIex switch on same PCI 1x slot. Why you are saying only on Slot 7 and it works for you? Is it because I have not all slots in use? If I put same wire switch on 2nd Slot then I can use the raiser cable there as well. So I am confused...

Can you explain to me what this switch is doing? And why I have to switch each port, and not only 7 like yours.
And why Slot 4 is not usable? As I wanted to go as next step with 7 GPU´s.

Brgds,

Brgds,

I have the same motherboard, you've had to jumper which slots? All of them?
