It is a fair deal. The 580m [sli] is between sli-750m and a 7970m. You'd be getting better performance than spending the same money on something new.

The M18x R1 had serious overheating issues. I'd look the subject up and decide for yourself if you want to go that route. "M18x R1 overheating" comes up with 25,000+ hits on Google.

If you can keep it cool, the performance should be great.

I'd try to knock off 100-150 bucks and get yourself an SSD to install

Nooooooo..... the 580M is on par with the GTX 765M. It's no faster than the mainstream GPUs today. 750M SLI would smoke one without trying...

However that is a VERY good deal. biggrin.gif I'd snag it fast! biggrin.gif

That is a great deal, I never had dual 580s, but the R1 I had with dual 6990s never overheated, but I usually have it on a cooling pad, and i limit my FPS to prevent issues. I would get it, take it apart, clean and repaste the GPUs, dust out the fans, etc...

The only thing that concerns me is that i only has a 210w Power supply, It should probably be a 330w? I think my R1 with 6990s had a 330w adapter and so have both of my R2s with 7970s (3 if you count a DOA one that I received)

Does it have any warranty left? my guess is probably not.

I think $1000 is a solid deal as long as it works properly. The XM CPU overclocks, and it should have the triple heatsink so it should be quite fast. I know people on the NBR forums are asking quite a bit more than that (some has high as $2000 which is outlandish, but still).

You can upgrade the R1 to 780s too (its quite costly though) it can house a 3rd hard drive, I believe it can take ram up to 1866mhz if you wanted it to. I love the m18x line, the build quality is fantastic, it feels like a high end piece of hardware for sure.

i strongly disagree with that statement

ive had 3 m18x's, my first one was an R1 and ran a 2960xm @ 4.5ghz on all 4 cores and 780m SLI...i think the cooling system is quite well designed...3 fans, well designed 3-pipe heatsinks on both GPU's and CPU

ive used mine 99% on my lap or sitting on a bed pretty much with blocked vents...yes it gets hot but really there is only so much heat a laptop can dissipate we're talking 300+ watts

also find it interesting about the comments on price...even today an m18xr1 with an extreme cpu and a 580m SLI setup would easily fetch $1000

sorry to ressurect but the issue is still relevant...used m18x's sell like hotcakes on ebay
