What exactly did I just break on my 7950?

I'm curious more than anything, I'm wondering if anyone has an idea of what exactly I broke on my HD 7950.

I went against one of the top rules and got paid back for it - I was working on my computer while it was powered on. I just needed to do a quick cable tuck, and I thought I could get away with it lol, I ended up nicking my finger on my bottom mounted case fan, and my hand flew up out of reflex. Right into my graphics card. My card is shroud-less, so the whole back of the PCB up to the reference heatsink bent upward, but not the rest of the card.

My screen went blank, and now when I turn my computer on with the card installed, it won't post, and the fan runs at 100%.

There are no visible cracks on the PCB, no mosfets, caps, vram chips, coils missing. No visible damage that I can tell, I even checked the die area and it's untouched.

I'll probably end up throwing this card in the oven at some point, and testing it on my Dell motherboard, so if the re-flowed solder shorts out I won't lose anything of value tongue.gif

Well human skin is somewhat conductive so by touching the card with your bare hands while its powered on can short out some of the circuitry and cause damage to IC's.

Well,if you know you screwed it and your card isn't working means its broken right?
There is a good chance that you might have shorted something by touching one of the components with your skin and therefor blown a component, or it might be that you have disconnected a component by causing the solder to come off with the new bend in the PCB, alternatively it might be that you have damaged a trace or something within the PCB itself.

It could be a number of things but it definitely sounds buggered to me. Take the heatsink off and have a look if you want because I don't think you're going to be able to RMA it now XD

Thanks for the replies, I forgot to mention that I made no contact with anything conductive, because I have a fan covering the back of the PCB where my hand hit, so I hit the actual fan and bent the card upward. The fan didn't grind anything off the card lol, so yeah it must be a damaged trace I can't see or a solder point is messed up.

if it has no easily detectable physical damage, can't you just RMA it ?

Try it in the other machine or in a different pcie slot if possible. You might not have done anything to the card, it might be damage to the slot itself.

If the PCB flexed you probably broke some internal connections in the PCB.

Sounds dead to me...my AMD card powered on with fans on but wouldnt display anything on screen.

I don't think it's an option, warranty info doesn't say anything specific about BIOS flashing, but I don't think they'd appreciate that I lowered the clocks on the BIOS 2 switch and reflashed it a while ago.

I did try the card in another slot, no dice. I'm grateful that I didn't snap the slot off the board, ASRock appears to make one hell of a PCIe slot!

Yep, and I just realized that the point of bend was where the VRMs are, who knows, maybe one of the solder points broke and then the GPU got a million volts rolleyes.gif

Yeah, even if I connect my monitor to my mobo it won't post lol
