[Inside Gaming] Steam OS vs Windows 8

Thread Starter
The following is a comical review/overview of the Steam OS featuring FPS results in half life 2/ serious sam 3 BFE. The video may contain coarse language. As expected[?] Steam OS had massive fps drops I believe at one point I saw the counter drop to 8. It also had random complete freezing etc.
I recall earlier some other bench[in the news] resulted in steam os being only a few fps shorter than windows but this has actual proof that it's no where near.

Beta OS vs OS that's been released for over a year that has already had a major update.

I wonder which will perform better?

to me it was the fact that a earlier review showed steam os 2fps lower than windows 8 when a bench with video proof displays it is 100fps lower
Like I understand it's bea I accept that. but I recall everyone complimenting a bench from earlier being 2fps lower and it mad me mad because it's not that developed yet

Yeah, give it time peeps.

Even the release was like "HEY! This is brand-new and still pretty darn buggy, so play with it, have fun with it, but for God's sake remember that it's a Beta!"thumb.gif

It'll get better.

(It's gonna take Steam-time to get better, but that's a given, right?)

All hardware is going to perform differently. It also depends if they correctly set it up. Phoronix reviews are best as Phoronix knows how to set up an install of Linux.

Answer me this;

What is his motherboard?
What is his CPU?
What is his video card?
What video drivers did he use? <- Big factor depending on the card used.

How many more factors can we list? tongue.gif

The video card and video drivers used are the biggest factors though, in my opinion. You can't just slap the latest (testing) drivers on and expect them to be 100%.

But right now I can guarantee that my run through of Serious Sam 3 BFE, was flawless. No freezing like he got, and always at or above 60FPS. This on a GTX460SE 1GB card, so pretty old, but still decent.

1 Year, and some small change. A good bit of which was beta.

http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/linux/ <- dates of when the private beta was, which really doesn't say much in terms of performance, as it was private beta with extremely limited hardware selection, and fresh ports.

Also, BETA BETA BETA. Does no one know what this means? BUGS! Lots of them!

Linux has been around for quite some time. This is not a completely new operating system but built on a Linux frame.

Anyways, is it true that they are going to have SteamOS remain/be open? That would be one heck of a mistake. SteamOS has potential in the grounds of them releasing 400 dollar prebuilt machines and then market them to the crowd. But better games? That's completely questionable as there are numerous console exclusives out there that you won't find on the PC. Most "Linux" conversions worth playing are rather dated as well.

In the end, the performance results are a lot different then what we saw on other reviews. It performs nearly 50% slower on Linux then it does on Windows.

I really really hope people aren't going to prematurely put this down and end up killing it. I hope people realize how good this is going to be for PC gaming industry. I believe that microsoft is really going to try and consolidate their power in the industry. Which will be absolutely horrible for us.
