290x VRM1 High Temps EK waterblock

Thread Starter
I got my waterblock installed and when running furmark I was getting temps like 95C on vrm 1 while running furmark.

So I reseated the block and now I am getting 80C after 15 minutes of running...

The GPU Core is running at 50C and VRM 2 is at 43C

Do I just not have enough flow or radiator space or are the VRM 1 just that hot ???

Also I have a 4770k and 290x on a monsta 360mm and xpsc ax 360.

Edit:
For anyone coming into the thread the Fujipoly Extreme pads made an excellent change in my temps!

Temps after hour of furmark:
Gpu: 49C
VRM 1: 44C
VRM 2 : 36C

Also I only changed pads on VRMs and not the ram

It's probably not making a good enough contact since reseating helped. You might want to try thicker thermal pads for that spot alone IF thats's the only thing in between the block and vrm.

U have plenty of rad space. Your VRM shouldn't be getting that high of temp. There is definitely something not right. Its either the installation of the block was not done correctly or you have a bum card. I would take apart the block again and start over. Do the same with the backplate if you have one. Good Luck.

Thanks I kind of figured it wasn't getting good contact but wanted to make sure

I've got exactly the same setup as you.

My 290 is now running at 1200/1350

Load: (Battlefield 4, 64 player conquest large for 3 hours consecutive)
GPU core load : 50
VRM1 load : 80
VRM2 load : 40

Ive tried a reseat as well : no change.

Holy crap that is crazy compared to my 290X and EK block. My 290X at +100 and 1170 on the core tops out at 50c on the core and 61c for VRM 1 and 36c for VRM 2. I am running an xspc bay res with D5 pump, raystorm cpu block, EK gpu block, EX360 rad, EX240 rad and 3 sxpc 1650 fans on the 360 rad and 2 xspc 1650 fans and 2 of the stock corsair case fans in push pull on the 240 rad.

I did however use FujiPoly ultra extreme on the ram and VRM's. On the vrm's I also applied a small amount of 7 carat diamond TIM on top of the fujipoly before i sat the water block in place.

I will do a stock run of furmark and report back with my temps.

EDIT: Stock run i max out at 45c on the core and 47c on vrm 1 and 35c on vrm 2.

EKWB states that thicker thermal pads should work.

Just installed the EK acetal+nickel block on my 290x. Running XSPC Raystorm EX360. Radiator fans on minimum speed. Max temps with 15 minutes of Furmark 1080p fullscreen:

GPU: 62C
VRM1: 83C
VRM2: 51C

Maybe these temps aren't that unusual.

Update: FWIW, I've noticed temps have improved a little after another 24 hours (may have still been some air in the system).

GPU: 58C
VRM1: 79C
VRM2: 48C

You have to apply some thermal past on each VRM and then put the thicker thermal pad. Before this i was getting 78-80C in VRM1 with +50mV. Now i am getting under 70C

I'll be installing my waterblock on my 290X this week and I have some Fujipoly Extreme. Would I be better off simply using that and completely bypassing the provided thermal pads? Or do I need a certain thickness to assure proper contact?
