nVidia to Release Shader Overclocking

The current driver doesn’t have shader clock overclocking enabled yet, but NVIDIA has promised it in a future driver release – we’re not sure when that will happen though. There is still the option to independently overclock the core and memory frequencies in the usual manner though.

From what we understand, the shader clock increases in line with any core clock increases, but we’re not sure of the actual ratio at which the shader clock increases in relation to the core clock. NVIDIA would not disclose that information when we asked, so I guess we’ll have to wait for independent shader overclocking at some point in the future.
Currently, nVidia and most OCing software allows users to directly adjust only the core and memory clock speeds. Looks like they will be allowing manual shader overclocking soon. This would make it easier to remove the delta and allow even higher overclocks.... which is a good thing!

You do. However, there is a delta... a set difference which may limit your current overclock. A 8800GTX has a 575MHz core, 1350MHz shader, and 1800MHz memory. I am not sure of the exact core to shader relationship. However, the shader clock is currently tied to your core clock. When you overclock, your shader OR your core may hit its limit first. A seperate control would allow fine tuning.

An example... let's say your core can do 700MHz but your shader can't run at this speed while tied to the core. You could turn down the shader overclock and let the core do its max.

Modifying the delta changes the shader frequency by a large amount. I believe a good OC does increase the freq of the shaders, but not by that much. Delta adjustments are reccomended for anyone w/ a 7900 that has a clock speed greater than 650-700mhz, as these speeds are close to the current limits and capacitor switching frequency on the cards. A small delta adjustment usually provides better stability around or above the mentioned speeds.

BTW. I was actually thinking a bit about it after leaving the thread, and wondered if it was because the shader would hit max before core. It appears to be

i have a 7900-based card, and i will be going over 650 with a vMod, how do i adjust it?

BIOS editor like Nibitor. Those will allow you in the bios file and set the new delta value.
