N54l + WHS2011 + Plex?

Thread Starter
Been thinking of trying a small server for a while and saw that the N54l's are on sale again at newegg. It still has a turion processor @ 2.2ghz, but curious if if would be sufficient to run a basic WHS 2011 and plex server. Plex server has been on my gaming machine and would like to have it off.

The plex server will likely only be for streaming movies to a pair of Roku 3's (and never at the same time).
Other than this, perhaps have it as a local back up for photos (in addition to off site) and maybe music storage.

Before this sale came up, I was looking at a $600 synology, so the $250 is N54L is a lot cheaper.

Thanks for any experience or thoughts.

The new transcode engine in Plex has really dropped CPU load a heap, so yes it should be fine.

Thanks. Appreciate knowing that. When did Plex change?

For the about $230 after MIR, the N54L just looks like a nice entry point for a small server. Will use some drives I have laying around before upgrading. For what I'm looking at, is there any point to upgrade RAM or other features above stock?

Quite some time ago, any recent version will have the new transcoder. I'd probably bump it to 4GB if you can.

Need to check on cash flow, but the ram would be a good idea.
Is there much point in on vs another when I'm using it for this light purpose
(I'm sure with heavy duty servers, you'd want the best & ecc, but I'm cheap)

The n54l is a good entry level server. It will handle transcode ok for 1 stream and streaming (without transcode) without issue depending on your network. Upgrading the RAM is something that will be worthwhile, however not essential. Serving up media is not memory intensive. I was considering the N54L or a gen8 myself but will likely build my own on a budget of about $500 without data drives (a 120GBssd for OS/apps). For the price, nothing can touch the N54L tho

What are thoughts of ECC vs non-ECC RAM in this thing?

Also, I was going to use some old drives I have hanging around until I later upgrade with newer drives. I was thinking of taking the 250gb out for use with data and using a slim dvd drive & drive bay in the top 5 1/4. I have a 500gb 2.5" laptop drive from an earlier SSD upgrade - any concern with this? Looks like I will need to use an esata-sata cable to make it work (4xdata, 1xOS, 1xOD)

EDIT: anyone know if the rear esata is powered or not?

You don't need ECC RAM for a home file and media server. I do not believe there is any such thing as "powered eSATA"

Go with ECC ram on the n54l, its not much different in price and if it supports it you might as well.

As for the drive arrangement, imo you would be better off without the OD (use a USB/external if needed). Also the esata is not powered. Some newer boards use estate/usb3 powered ports but I am not sure if that translates to the esata portion being self powered.

Just for info on powered eSATA:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESATAp

I was also thinking of using a USB DVD drive - I haven't had one in a laptop for a few years.
I was only thinking of having an OD for ripping movies.

As far as ECC - haven't had much luck in finding a kit of 2x4 ecc for much below $90. Maybe I will check the market place here.

EDIT: any thoughts of running the os off of the 2.5" drive?
