N54l + WHS2011 + Plex? - Page 2

I'm running this setup now minus the Plex. N54L with a 60Gb SSD in the ODD bay. 4 Seagate 3TB drives in the removable bays. WHS2011 runs like butter on her, but installing with only a 60Gb SSD was a pain. Instead of putting the drives in any array, I chose to use a program called DriveBender (inexpensive) that basically pools the HD's into one big 11.3TB pool. It's pretty slick, and since I have all the data on it backed up elsewhere I'm not concerned with a drive failing and losing data.

little server just came today - very cold from being on the truck. and it's a cute little thing.
thinking now of adding a 2xsata card and keep everything internal rather than running an esata cable to an internal drive. Only about $10 more. Still up in the air about adding memory.

Also, using it with WHS 2011- is there any use for the internal (or external) USB ports? (external thought of DVD, but that's it).

Internal USB could be used for rear bracket if you want, existing external could always take external drive/usb stick, printer, DVD, etc.

Adding a sata card probably isnt a bad idea. Adding memory may not be needed, set it up and get it running and see if you think its worth it.

Is it just me or is this thing bristling with USB ports? 4x on the front and a another group in the back?

Thats a good thing, i think? Gives you plenty of options. Honestly for the price it really packs alot into such a small package

It really does. I'm kinda miffed that I waited so long to pick one up.

Hey, new thought, what do you think about running one of these cables (usb-microsata) from the motherboard up to a slim dvd drive in combo with a pair of 2.5? (already have the bay device, slim OD & 2.5") - eeks out another device without using an SATA.

Is there any problem with using the SATA on the MB for OS rather than OD?

If its USB it will be much slower then sata. Fine for a OD, but probably not for an OD + drive.

Nope, just thinking for an OD.
