Designing a new desk, with a bed? - Page 2

use a bunch of em and glue em in with epoxy. Then the tube can help hole em together too. also put a couple screws though each side for every brace.

if you're feeling really paranoid you can use some minimal expanding foam in the voids. That stuff actually has mad compression strength. Don;t use too much though you can blow the thing apart during curing, even with all those screws. you can skip the epoxy though. that thing will never come apart again if you foam it. (Ever. hands too, so be careful with it)

probably want to assemble everything put one side, which you leave as a box top. Foam it, cut off the excess with a hand saw, then screw the top down

Are you saying i should foam the hole tunnel?

i'm going to put things like DVD-roms and USB hubs in therexD + 2x200mm fans will be ventilating the thing.

also the tunnel will hold the bed, the only thing i wanted to make sure of is that the back wall of the tunnel won't cave under pressure.
seeing it's the backwall of the tunnel thats going to hold all the weight of the bed and monitors.

still if needed i could always make a metal frame behind the tunnel to help support it.

atm i'm just doodling around with making the wacom intuos4 into a DIY cintiq that can hinge upwards for easyer drawing tongue.gif

i'm crazy dave mad i know!

you probably don't need to. it just was an idea i had after i finished typing. if you got a good 1/2" thickness at the narrowest part of the circle square and put one in every foot or so it will probably work. An engineer could do the math and tell you. i am not one such however. i have to survive by overbuilding.

why do4es the tube need to be round btw? i'm assuming it is a design element and will go quite well with that counterweight thing. loking at it againyou will likely need more than one pulley. one to get the bed back far enough, and one to make the weight drop straight.

I'm not sure what you mean with the Tube now?

if your talking about the tunnel i drew ontop of the desk with the round holes thats just for Fans.

it will just be a square tunnel 25cm deep and 23cm high. with a open bottem.
the ends will be closed by a piece of square wood with a hole the size of a 200mm PC fan. ( little ventilation for the parts inside the tunnel + less dust )

Ill upload a new image with a exploded view so it's easyer to understand.

just noticed the glas is ontop of the PC cubes .....

1-2 of these per side will help with the weight.
planning on having these mounted to the metal underframe and then to the backplate of the bed.
might need a sheet of metal to keep the wood from beeing deformed.

make sure they have the movement distance you need. it would suck if the thing was stuck 45deg up or down. Those things will also be weight rated, and will lift that amount of weight at the corner. the farther in you put them the more leverage works against them and the higher the effective weight of the bed.

Would probably also be good if the access holes in the box tube was big enough to stick a fist through. it may make access alot easier

True id need a pair just to test the amount of weight and to see what distance would be best.
tho i have to be carefull... don't want the bed to be at a 20degree angle if i'm not lying ontop of itxD

Personally I think this one looks cool and might be a better idea. At least worth looking into it a bit. I'm sure you could adjust the design to fit your needs.

latches.

i took the opportunity to make a complete hash of your nice drawing. mspaint is a horrible program. Been 2o years since I've been near a wacom tablet and photoshop, and i didn't have either, so bear with me.

i put in the weight towers and modded the front legs to provide two steps, which would allow you to actually get in and out of the thing. it looks a lot more imposing. the weight towers could probably do with being a good bit smaller.

interesting. it solves the weight problem too. +1

with system like this, the monitor wall would be permanant. You could hinge the side ones so you could watch tv in bed. downside is you have to clear your desk before you can sleep, and keyboard storage becomes an issue.
