Recommend me a pair of 120mm PWM case fans. - Page 4

Not a problem at all. thumb.gif

Just wanted you to know that CFM and static pressure specs are not really much good as most fans don't give us anything new accurate data... and in real world we need to know what the fuctional CFM @ a functional static pressure, not the 60CFM@0mm or 0.6mm@0.0CFM.

Here's a good example of spec versus real world use. Blue fan is 100cfm & 1.5mm H2O while red fan is 63cfm & 3.5mm H2O. Red fan dramatically out-performs blue from 57cfm @ 0.70mm H2O when both are equal... and blue is moving 44cfm @ 1.50mm H2O where red fan is moving nothing at all. Add in a real world pressure line and blue is still way ahead of the curve.. no pun. biggrin.gifthumb.gif

Martin does a good job of showing how specs don't show real world use here with similar fan specs but their actual cfm@mm H2O show a very different story..

So I may or may not be wrong with regards to PWM fans or technology. But let's say I'm looking for 4 pin PWM fans as preference, to save us trouble.

But thanks for the analogy and explanation. Good read, I suppose.

If they are CPU headers, then they are in all likelihood PWM

CHA, OPT or an other header ......even if they are 4 pin ..... even if it says in manual that its PWM ......they are most likely not actually PWM. I wanted to make this clear especially for those lurking as many users are oft sorely disappointed when they buy PWM fans cause assume 4 pin headers means PWM and then realizes they wasted their money because the fan headers are DC controlled.

You don't need to have a reason for PWM ...... say you like things that begin w/ "P" cause ya name is Peter. smile.gif Again, just wanted to make it clarify ..... just because ya have a PWM header, you do not **need** to use PWM fans..... using a PWM /. DC Hub like the Phanteks will give you all the benefits of PWM w/o the additional expense.

I am SURE both my headers has PWM functions as far as I can test the same 4 pins PWM fans (Let's say my Hyper 212 Evo fan), and can control them perfectly on both headers in the exact same way via SpeedFan. That is my going as far as calling them PWM compatible, as stated in previous posts. One is labelled CPU and the other SYS_Fan. But as stated above, they perform in the exact same way, only labelled different.

Yes maybe I should look to alternative as opposed to fixating on "PWM" fans, per se.

Man the discussion veered off lol tongue.gif

Easy way to test if SYS_fan is PWM is check the 12v power pin (2nd wire usually yellow) is 12v all the time. If it's voltage varies it's not PWM is variable voltage control. wink.gif

Might do that when new non-dangerous PSU gets here tomorrow.

Yes, you just hit the nail on the head....

CPU_Fan is most likely PWM
SYS_Fan is most likely DC

And yes, it is expected that they will perform in the exact same way....regardless of whether they both PWM, one of each, or both DC

Just get the AF120's, quiet and provide good airflow. I personally have 2 builds with AF's, very quiet.

Not sure if they are PWM, I just run them at full.

I control the h100i stock fans and SP120's with Corsair Link, and I can turn them down. So I'm guessing the Stock rad fans are PWM, where as the SP120's are not. (either high or low)

Check to see if there's a PWM edition.

Regarding Corsair's AF120s and AF only. I do not seem to be able to find them in 4 pin/PWM configuration, or at least in the UK anyway. I guess I might just end up getting the AF120 PE, and if it is too loud, use the included adaptor. Still need a PWM splitter though. I would rather that than 3 pin to molex.

Thanks.

If you have a PWM splitter with molex/sata power just use it. If fan stays at 100% speed than you know it's now a PWM header. wink.gif

I have an Asus board that is compatible with the Fan Xpert.
The CPU Fan is PWM and the others 4-pin headers are voltage control.

This is a speed test in the Fan Xpert about the CM XtraFlo PWM 600 rpm - 2000 rpm hooked in the CPU FAN (PWM):
The 212 Evo Euro version comes with the XtraFlo PWM 600 rpm - 1600 rpm.

The CPU Fan provides always 12V and the fan speed changes according to the fan power.

The fan always spins even at 0% fan power with min around 600 rpm just as stated.

The next speed test is about the XtraFlo hooked in the CHA FAN (DC):

This fan will not spin at lower voltage.

I don't know about SpeedFan but the Asus Fan Xpert let me know that the CHA FAN is actually voltage control.
