If it'll fit in your case, the Noctua NH-D14 (link) is among the best.

Another solid performer is the Scythe Mugen series of coolers (link).

It might be too big for your preferences (color scheme is all opinion) but my favorite will always be the Noctua NH-D14. Last time I bought one it was king of air coolers but I've moved onto water cooling. If I decided to go back to air cooling it would be what I would buy without a second thought.

Edit

I see Leyaena beat me to the punch by 30 seconds or so smile.gif

It is, and always will be, my first recommendation to people looking for a good air cooler smile.gif
There was supposed to be a successor to the NH-D14 soon though, quite possible we'll see it at CES this year.

To OP: There's some pretty decent closed-loop watercooling units as well, some of which you can extend with other components if you ever want to move into full watercooling.
They're available in roughly the same price category, if that's what was holding you back. If it's fear of leaks, most of them come with a pretty good anti-leak insurance.

Or, if you want truly amazing results, and price is no issue, there's always full custom watercooling ^^

Honestly, though, the Noctua NH-D14 is amazing for an aircooler, if you can fit it inside your system, you'll be very happy with the results.

Here's a list of some (not all) of the top cooler and their sizes.
Cooler size (Width x Depth x Height looking from front of case with motherboard laying flat)

Akasa Medusa .= . 8x 6mm pipes 144x129.5x163mm w/ 140mm & 120mm PWM fans 49.6mm*
K2 / Assassin . = . 8x 6mm pipes 140x128x158mm 146x154x160mm w/ 120mm & 140mm PWM fans43.2mm*
Dark Rock Pro 2 =. 7x 6mm pipes 138x124x166mm 138x149x166mm w/ 120mm & 135mm PWM fans
NH-D14 . . . . = . . 6x 6mm pipes 140x130x160mm 140x158x160mm w/ 120mm & 140mm fans44mm*
NH-U14S . . . = . . 6x 6mm pipes 150x52x165mm plus fans base offset 2mm 41mm*
PH-TC14PE. . = . . 5x 8mm pipes 140x159x171mm w/ 2x 140mm fans, PWM adaptor40-45mm*
Megahalem. . = . . 6x 6mm pipes 130x74x158.7mm plus fans 40mm*
HE01 . . . . .= . . . 6x 6mm pipes 140x119x160mm w/ 140x38mm PWM fan 42mm*
Archon SB-E. . = . 8x 6mm pipes 155x53.6x170.2mm plus fans 34.45mm*
Silver Arrow . = . . 4x 8mm pipes 147x123x163mm 151x149x168mm w/ 2x 140mm Fans 40.87mm*
SA SB-E . . . .= . . 8x 6mm pipes 155x105x164mm 170x130x170mm w/ 140mm & 150mm PWM fans 31.9/39/46mm**
SA SB-E Extreme . 8x 6mm pipes 155x105x164mm 155x130x165mm w/fans Smaller because of 140mm fan vs 150mm

CryOrig R1 Ultimate = 7x 6mm pipes 140x142.4x168.3mm w/ XF140(25mm) fans****
CryOrig R1 Universal = 7x 6mm pipes 140x130x168.3mm w/ 1x XT140(13mm) & 1x SF140(25mm) fans*****

*cooler base to bottom fin. (add 8mm for motherboard to bottom fin.)
**fins are at 3 different levels
****to be released soon. Testing it now.
*****to be released soon.
Phanteks PH-TC14PE, SST-HE01 and Silver Arrow SB-E are a little better than NH-D14. That said, all in the list are within a few degrees of each other.

I have a 4770K and use a Thermalright Archon SB-E x2 with CLP for thermal paste, everything mounted in a HAF-X case.

When the 4770K was not delidded this would cool a 4.4GHz / 4400MHz overclock without any problem and on my Sabertooth Z87 motherboard you have access to all ram slots with this HSF.

After I delidded my 4770K the SB-E x2 cools my 4.7GHz / 4400MHz overclock without working up a sweat.

I used OCCT Linpack AVX 64 bits and OCCT CPU Large Data Set 64 bits to stress test my overclocks and never got close to 91C on my core temps.
