To Upgrade or Wait...

Thread Starter
Hi All,

I'm currently thinking about upgrading my current rig to Haswell. However, with the new chipset due to arrive later this year I'm not so sure if I should pull the trigger or not.

Currently, I'm using a i7 980x. The main reasons I'm looking to switch is to have SATA6G, more USB 3.0support and a lower power utilization from my processor. Another note is that makes me want to upgrade is currently I cannot use Windows 8.1 without intermittent hard locks, I've narrowed this down to some sort of driver issue/incompatibility (strange the computer works just fine with Windows 8)

Thanks in advance for some guidance and suggestions!

Hmm let's focus on what's causing that lockup before you decide to make such a big jump!

Go to your Mobo's website and download all of the latest Windows 8.1 drivers. Ethernet/Sata Chipsets/Sound/etc...

I've already tried that, however ASUS pretty much has no support for 8.1 with my board. I've monitored logs and ran hardware stress tests on all components and that yielded nothing.

Nothing in the event logs showed anything either.

I'd revert to Windows 8 (reformat your PC?) and give it a try. See if that resolves the issue, then reinstall 8.1 and see if it happens again. You have your RAID SSD's so that shouldn't take more than an hour or so with all the updates downloaded/installed.

Thanks for the idea, but I've installed 8.1 fresh a couple times and the same issue occurs. Seems to happen particularly while I'm gaming.
