Mantle is 45% faster ? Is this true ? - Page 3

Regarding Mantle’s performance, it was mentioned at CES that the performance increase with Battlefield 4 was up to 45 percent. Will this sort of performance boost be the normal for titles under Mantle?

Robert Hallock: Every game is different, of course, but we’ve said all along that we didn’t undertake the Mantle project to chase two or three percent performance improvements. With each game, we’ll be publishing a full set of data and we’re confident people will be pleased with the uplift.”

Even if the performance of the Mantle API isn’t up to 45 percent per game, and only works out to be half as much, that’s still going to be a significant difference. This can turn a title barely running in 30FPS into the comfortable to play territory, or titles which are just shy of the target of 60 shooting way past that number. Obviously it’s still too early to make judgement calls quite yet, but for titles that have AMD’s Mantle API available, Nvidia could be in for a fight.

I’m hoping there’ll be news of Nvidia embracing the technology, or some alternative to start to resolve this

I personally think a lot of people are still misinterpreting the key points which Mantle is aimed to address. The Mantle API should take the bottle neck of the Driver off of the CPU and thus allow the GPU to work to it's full potential. From the sources I've seen I have this current understanding of the benefits Mantle will bring.

Direct X is currently inefficient compared with Mantle. The CPU finds it much harder to communicate with the GPU hardware.

Mantle will give better performance to an application even if it wasn't effected by a CPU bottleneck. The only way of putting this into terms which people I've spoke about mantle to was; If you had a car which was limited to 100 bhp, but was capable of 300. Say it topped out at 80, and did 0-60 in 5 s. When removing the limiter, the car wouldn't only increase in top speed but also in acceleration i.e. new top speed 120, 0-60 in 3 s.

Yes the key to mantle is reducing the load on the CPU, but by making the whole process more efficient, it means that us folks with cards already sitting @ 100% usage in BF4 will still see an increase in FPS. The GPU will still run at 100% but it will be processing mantle instructions, not Direct X. Like taking an exam in your first language rather than your second!

Also this was posted in the AMD Mantle Discussion thread. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yak25TKCCrc
It's not as well known as the AMD demo, but look at the number of individual units which are all operating with their own independent AI - I am not someone who can understand batch count and how that is good or bad. But damn I can understand what it takes to get 7000 all doing their thing at once! (oh and that's on a FX-8350 @ 2Ghz biggrin.gif ) NOM NOM!

If it really is a hoax, it's over for AMD. I'm sorry AMD, I like you as a company because you give me more value for my dollar (well euro where I live), but you've been pulling all sort of bad things out your ass. Please AMD, don't F up.

Just as this has been posted on the Mantle Discussion Thread:
http://www.nordichardware.se/CES2014/vi-spelar-mantle-versionen-av-bf4-i-eyefinity-pa-en-laptop.html

Some key points of the video in the link:

- The laptop is a MSI with AMD processor and a R9M 290X
- Eye Infinity (duuh!)
- High settings
- 30 FPS

Using Mantle

Love the guy who checks there isn't a 'hidden' rig behind the desk!

Edit: posted early

Looks good.

Mantle - 45fps

Direct X - 13 fps.

That would make it ..... 100% faster at least ?

Very good explanation. I had a hard time understanding what it all meant.
One thing to clarify tho. Mantle will be a replacement for DirectX in games that will support it?
That is quite impressive by AMD. as far as i know, DX and OpenGL were loners for years weren't they?

Yeah, spot on. The video which was put out there claiming it was mantle BF4 was instantly discredited by that important DICE guy who's name eludes me right now as in the Video options menu, there will be a setting allowing you to choose which API you want to run the game in.
Similar to the option back in WoW when I played, allowing DX9 or DX11.

+rep much appreciated! never thought I'd get much rep on here, so didn't post much in the past! That's changing thumb.gif

at least it will make it easy for comparisons

Mantle is a low level API system that sits beneath high level APIs such as DirectX and Opengl. Mantle requires one of the two to output graphics.

EDIT:
Allow me to clear it up. DirectX and OpenGL also have low level APIs along with their high level APIs. AMD wants to substitute their low level APIs for theirs. DX 11.2 offers some performance boost to their High Level API that will also work with a better Low Level API.
