Yes, I also maintain that what AB shows is actually allocation and not usage.

So maybe in that particular situation the allocation was over 2300MB while usage was actually less than that and maybe that is why your FPS was as high as it was. What I stated is what I think is the general case and I'm yet to come across an exception to that. Even in my own experience I haven't seen VRAM allocation much above 2GB while still getting playable FPS.

Also, what settings are you playing at?

It was ultra with 2xMSAA and possibly 120% resolution scale or whatever that setting is called.

The thing is pretty much everybody relies on afterburner and the like to show vram usage, so who knows how much is really being used if afterburner is only showing allocation?

Personally I'm of the opinion that the 770 like the 7970/280x is powerful enough to use more than 2GB while remaining playable but how will we ever know how much vram is really actually being used if things like AB only show us an allocated amount? If people believe the 770 can't use more than 2GB while remaining playable then that means the 3GB on the 7970/280x is wasted too because these cards are equal in power, the 770 has enough memory bandwidth to use more than 2GB as well so the 280x having a wider bus width is not a reason why a 280x could use more than 2GB but a 770 couldn't.

I would say the only way to really use up like most of the Vram on the older cards is have a game like Gmod with a butt load of add-ons like I have. =p
I spawn literally every mob and gun in my menu and then I can see from the OSD that the freeze for a second is because my card is trying to clear out all the unused stuff.

I play with no AA and 150% resolution scale and almost never get 60FPS, and I'm playing with a 1200MHz Titan. This is really starting to bother me because I was told on another thread that a 770 is enough to max out BF4 at 1080p. I have to look into it, I must be doing something wrong.

Another explanation could be that the particular level or area of the game was quite huge and since VRAM was available the game loaded itself in advance so that it wouldn't have to transfer data as frequently as it would have to in case of lesser VRAM. But in no particular area was actually as VRAM heavy as 2300MB. This is why the FPS seemed unusually high for the amount of allocated VRAM.

EDIT (for your edit): I agree. The extra VRAM of the 7970/280X comes into play when used in CF when it can actually yield enough FPS even with more than 2GB of data loaded in it. But again, it depends on the assumption that the cards cannot yield enough FPS when more than 2GB is loaded in them.

The map I logged it on was that golmud railway one with the train that has loads of tanks etc I think. Speaking of Titans I have seen so many huge VRAM usage amounts from people with those things that it completely confirms that afterburner is showing allocated amounts and the more you have available the more gets allocated for use. I've seen some people report 4 and 5GB usage on some games when the game would never actually need so much, and this wasn't even on massive resolutions and multiscreen setups.

I'm surprised your Titan wasn't showing some ridiculous amount like 5GB usage lol, I have seen so many huge VRAM usage amounts from people with Titans that it completely confirms that afterburner is only showing allocated amounts and the more you have available the more it allocates.
Are you talking about multiplayer? Because I have only played the Campaign and not even the whole of it. I am only at the stage where that Chinese woman joins the squad.

Is the level that you are talking about included in the campaign? If so, I'll keep an eye out for it.

The main reason for less VRAM allocation is probably the use of no AA. That is the main culprit behind raising VRAM allocation/usage in today's games.

Also, I didn't keep an eye on the OSD at all times to check the VRAM allocation. So maybe it had gone up but I never noticed it. I'll be more careful from now on.

If you actually run out of VRAM and have to go to system memory, your GPU should only get a few FPS since it's a long page to the system RAM and back as far as a GPU is concerned.

Yes multiplayer, I am surprised you can't average around 60fps on a Titan with no msaa and resolution scale at 150%. I would have thought even with 4xMSAA and that resolution scale you would average around 50-60.
