[AnandTech] AMD FreeSync. - Page 17

So many fan boys in this thread its insane, from both sides. Everyone is butt hurt. Back on topic, because no one cares if AMD is in consoles or if NVidia is in cars.

Anyway, messing with the v-blank interval to synchronize rendering is abstracted as swap interval:
http://www.opengl.org/wiki/Swap_Interval

This isn't anything new and has been done for some time. What IS new is forcing a monitor to actually refresh when a v-blank interval is completed, because current implementations of variable v-blank is used to simply determine if a frame will fit within a render interval or if the previous frame will have to be duplicated until the interval is complete.

Essentially they're hoping that newer monitors will implement variable v-blank in such a way that a frame is rendered upon v-blank completion. Instead of 'hoping', NVidia is guaranteeing this with their own hardware and calling it g-sync.

its explained there.
i would have figured that more people would be intrigued by this, as usually motorheads and computer guys are similar.

Heh, I see you just joined us.

One suggestion that will serve you well during your stay here at OCN. Stay away from the Intel, AMD and NVidia threads on the news topics. Will save you a lot of wat XD

The real question here is: will the current g-sync monitor support FreeSync ..?

That is a good question. If the AMD cards already support it shouldn't it just work with a monitor that supports it?? Unless Nvidia has done something to stop that, which they probably have. Those monitors are all overpriced TN panels anyway.

Even if it techically did, Nvidia wouldn't let it. But most likely they're using their proprietary tech for that.

Btw...

The exec's puzzlement over Nvidia's use of external hardware was resolved when I spoke with him again later in the day. His new theory is that the display controller in Nvidia's current GPUs simply can't support variable refresh intervals, hence the need for an external G-Sync unit. That would explain things. I haven't yet had time to confirm this detail with Nvidia or to quiz them about whether G-Sync essentially does triple-buffering in the module. Nvidia has so far been deliberately vague about certain specifics of how G-Sync works, so we'll need to pry a little in order to better understand the situation.

I would hold off on buying anything atm.

yeah but right after that:

That said, AMD is still in the early stages of cooking up a potential product or feature along these lines, and it has nothing official to announce just yet.

whos to say that their answer isnt months, years away. if its in the early stages of cooking, that could be a century for amd

Lmao, so you are down with paying a premium for a function that AMD gpus can do but haven't enabled in years? Let's think about this for a moment...
