CORNING, N.Y., January 06, 2014 – Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) today unveils Antimicrobial Corning® Gorilla® Glass at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). It is the first EPA-registered antimicrobial cover glass. The glass is formulated with an antibacterial agent, ionic silver, which is incorporated into the glass surface for sustained activity. Process and metrology innovations enable the precise control of silver levels necessary to preserve the mechanical, optical, and dielectric properties of Corning Gorilla Glass.

Bout time...
Bet the average phone has more lil ppl on it than the average toilet seat (you clean/ disinfect the latter more often).
Ofc the glass is not nearly the only place bacteria grow on a phone, but...better than nothing...

Now, time for regular keyboards and mice to get some treatment.

I dont mind if my phone isnt perfectly clean, but nothing is worse than having to use a public mouse/keyboard to find it have gunk built up in it *shivers* Also I dont really want to think about all the laptop keyboards ive touched while repairing clients computers... sigh.

??

Most ppl now use their phone while on the toilet, only they don't wash it after rolleyes.gif
There is no difference. W/e was on your toilet or on your hands you've tried to disinfect from is on the phone now. Even if it was a single cell, it will start producing more and more.

Add all your friends and family that play with it after playing with their human interface devices...i.e. smartphones, regular phones, door handles, mice, keyboards, car steering wheels, knobs, transmission levers and all these gazillion of stuff we use daily and are full of germs...but we don't clean. And even if the glass will be silver plated, there will still be a ton of crevices and plastic and metal components that will allow bacteria to grow just fine on them.

But it is fine...we survive regardless. Actually we survive exactly because of germs: many of our typical body operations are relying on bacteria. The typical human body has 10 times more bacteria cells than "human" cells.

This "germofobia" that companies try to capitalize on has little to do with the true, beneficial hygiene.

Why would your phone have bacteria anyways....

oh wait...

nevermind

anyways, like the above have said, should be nice if they can apply something like this on keyboards and mice. Im sure that that stuff has alot of bacteria, simply because we are always touching other stuff around or maybe some who is sick can throw some bacteria at the keyboard or mice.

They should apply this to hair combs as well, nobody wanta ringworm or dandruff lol

Cleaning my phone and tablet now with alcohol....ew dat nasty puke.gif

I think they mean 1,000 species of bacteria. Phones are so filthy that 1,000 individuals would be an extremely small number.

I wonder how this will affect the other applications of ionic silver ie water purification, self-sterilizing lab equipment, etc. Ionic silver's mechanism of action is to disrupt enzymatic activity by causing the proteins to precipitate out; mechanisms of resistance have developed to combat enzymatic disruption antibiotics.

EDIT: wikipedia says that the effectiveness of this mechanism is enhanced when an electrical field is applied. Maybe this will be able to raise the % killed high enough that resistance won't start to build.

That awkward moment when you have to back up their porn folder...I literally had to get gloves after seeing some of the file names show up on the transfer dialog.

Clorox disinfecting wipes are your friend...all my customers used to thank me for how clean they are when returned. I always would say that it is just something we do as a courtesy to them...right to them.

That's why you plug in your own keyboard + mouse :thumb: Never have to use someone elses dirty components.
