this doesnt rid of windows..at least not from my understanding of the quoted part posted in the OP.
No, but you're locked into Windows. THere's a lot of stuff you just can't do in Linux or Android because it doesn't get enough support. I still have no native Photoshop and the amount of Steam games you get are small compared to what you get with Windows. Not to mention everything has to be in OpenGL now.
Windows is where it is right now not because it's good (it's not bad either), but because of the fact that there's so much lock in. No one ever makes a big deal out of it but Microsoft has everyone locked down with DirectX to the point where if you want to play serious games you have to use Windows.
Mantle is going to help with that a lot.
But the fact that Intel just got done with their CES announcement and had pictures of Android and even directly promoted their Edison box running Linux is huge. AMD isn't the only one bailing on Windows.
I still think that it'd take a few years at least for any sort of big ripples to show up, because people really hate changing from something very familiar, but it will happen. But the fact that Windows is losing support from basically all the major x86 players (Nvidia with Tegra K1, Intel pushing Linux/Android, AMD Mantle/Linux/Android)
It is happening whether you want to admit it or not. The time of AMD, Intel, Nvidia, and OEMs bending over backwards to get good Windows licensing deals are gone.
