One of my xfire 7970s runs much hotter than the other on the top or the bottom.

I have 2 Sapphire Dual X 7970 OC cards in my rig. Both were purchased from Newegg at about the same time. They are identical in part numbers and fairly close in serial numbers even. One of them consistently runs cooler than the other by at best 8 deg C and at worst 20 deg C. I have tested both of them at full load at 100% fan independently with only one card in the rig at a time and the temp difference was 10 deg C after 30 min of stress testing. This has never been an issue gaming because I have put the cooler card on top and that compensated for the temperature difference. Now that I have started mining with my rig it has become an issue. I have had to resort to having a house fan blow in the side of my case to keep the hotter card in temp spec. The cooler card even though on the top is running 8 deg cooler with the fan blowing on them both while mining currently. Should I re thermal paste the hotter running card, or should I send it in to Sapphire for RMA? Would re thermal pasting it void the warranty or have a chance of making the situation worse?

Usually removing the stock cooler (to re-apply thermal paste) will void your warranty, so if you do that and it doesn't work, you'll be SOL unless you want to try putting it under water (either full loop or by using something like the Kraken G10). If you can live without it for a few weeks, I'd suggest an RMA.

How hot?I sincerely doubt rmaing a card to sapphire because it runs hotter than your other card will result in anything other than you wasting 4-6 weeks and shipping costs, unless we are talking 100+° C

OP said that they're having to turn a house fan on the card to keep it within TJMax.

On the bottom the card hit 98C in about 5 min where as the other card was at 84C with my case closed and both video card's fans at 100% I stopped the mining application at that point out of fear of damaging the card. I really don't know how hot it would get if I let it go. By itself running without the other card in the case it will hit 85C after 30 min of mining at 100% fan.

With a lifetime warranty card such as that, I'd send it back for RMA. If it were out of warranty, then I'd remove the cooler and re-apply TIM. Probably just a bad paste job. Could also be voltage was tweaked on that board too high to meet specifications, but you should be able to confirm that using MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision X. If the boards are far apart in temperature regardless of top/bottom and at the same or very close voltage, it's usually a paste problem.

That sucks, my old Sapphire AMD boards had lifetime warranties on them. I even called about a 4 year old one having a fan gone up, and they mailed me a replacement heatsink and fan with a set of screws. Sad to hear they're not supporting their products as long.

I'd take it apart and repaste it, as long as there isn't any sticker that you'll rip or anything in the process, you'll be fine

Most of the time the void sticker is on one of the screw heads on the back of the card. Some don't have them some do. I bet they just used way too much paste.
