Does increasing RAM make a stable OC more difficult?

I'm currently building a system upgrade with a 4770K and a GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD4H, but I'm getting caught up on how much RAM to add to the system because I'll be going from DDR2 to DDR3. My gut keeps telling me that I should go for 16GB, but I've had more than one person recommend sticking with 8GB because the extra 8GB might increase latency and make getting a stable clock (I'm hoping for about 4.5GHz) more difficult. I'm hoping for some guidance in this situation so I don't end up making the clock impossible simply because I went for extra RAM...

If you're using 2 of the 4 slots, it shouldn't matter. Fill up all four DIMM slots, and then you might see some problems.

With the advent of 8GB RAM modules, you can have 16GBs while only using two of the four slots.

I hope someone can confirm what I have just said... lol

Confirmed. After setting my XMP profile I have to manually raise my tRFC to 251 to be able to post. SB specifically is more susceptible to problems with 32GB kits because of memory controller limitations. IB/HW are better suited to 32GB kits and shouldn't have that same issue.

Edit: I should probably note that after raising my tRFC the RAM is rock solid and can actually be overclocked a bit further as long as I don't change the tRFC.

I'll have to keep that in mind, though I'm upgrading to HW and I'm only planning on installing 16GB right now in 2 DIMMs. I am however going to be clocking the cpu and I expect I'll be upgrading to 32GB before I upgrade the rest of the system again, so we'll see what happens.

More modules => more RAM chips attached to the memory bus => more capacitive loading => signals turn on and off more gradually => less access time.

IOW it's harder to overclock the memory when more modules are installed.

Adding an extra 8GB ( 4GB x 2) did not have any negative effect on my OC. If you have the extra cash then go with 16GB

I have gone ahead and gotten 16GB on two sticks, figuring that is going to be the most stable and also leave me the option to add more later if programs begin to demand it. I'm guessing that the biggest issue with adding memory comes from the IMC needing to deal with all four DIMMs at once, but that's just a general guess based off of my limited knowledge.
