Happened with the Blackbird, maybe with this too.

But then again the Blackbird was about $1000 for a VERY limited edition run of cases.

There's actually a very good reason why you haven't seen anyone but Silverstone make 90 Degree motherboard mount on a case. They have a patent on it. We're not in the business of patent infringement, we leave that to Apple, Google, and Microsoft. tongue.gif

So, why is Origin making this, you may ask. Well, that's something you'd have to ask them. We were looking at doing it quite a while back, but since there's a patent on it, we're a little stuck unless we either pay Silverstone a licensing fee (not going to happen), or we contest the patent (also not going to happen.)

Otherwise, I'm sure you would have seen this idea played out by the rest of the industry. It's only logical since the FT02 was such a popular chassis.

I thought the patent on it was only valid in Taiwan or some-odd place like that?

Also, the patent really should be hard to contest. There's really nothing unique about rotating an existing design 90 degrees and then calling it your own.

SilverStone's patent is in Taiwan, Patent number : M336464. You can track from here - http://twpat6.tipo.gov.tw/tipotwoc/t...0001E000000000

Link to the patent seems messed up, but it shouldn't be hard to find it with the patent number.

REALLY ***

THIS MAKES ME SICK

I really want to do an inverted design so that the water blocks face up and so that the door panel is on the right which means I can put the PC under my desk on the left side instead or right next to me on the right side.

I am planning on case modding an old Dell XPS BTX case... But would much rather have this thing.

Taiwan is a treaty and trade partner with other countries. Most times they agree to honor the patents of trade partners. Everyone except China right smile.gif

But a patent on a direction? Really? Wow. Can I get a patent on putting an on/off switch and reset switch on the front and or top of a case? I invented that. See, I am the first one to think of patenting it, and this is the proof. You all are my witnesses.

But. how about 91 degrees? or rotated 270 degrees? Ya. Its not 90, thats a patent. Its the first 270 degree rotated case thumb.gif

I'm not a patent lawyer, nor will I pretend to play one on TV! I think, though, that since Taiwan is seen as a trade partner with the US (and other countries as well) that the patent would be honored in those countries despite not being actually patented in those countries. Again, I could be completely off base, but I think that's how it works.

Note, I'm not discounting the functionality of this new chassis, either. It's a really neat idea.

Annnd coming in at a whopping $4k starting price! We have done pretty much absolutely nothing at all!

On a serious note, Origin computers are just as bad a Alienware computers. All the have done here is make a removable mobo tray, make it be able to switch sides (not hard to do), and make the top have the same access points as the back. All this has done is eliminate the tiniest bit of steel used in the casing where the upper exhaust fans are.
