HD7950 VRM Cooling Improvement ?

Hi guys,

I was thinking, I'am using this

heatsink on my 7950 DCUII

Is it ok to use just heatsink without thermal tape and put it directly on VRM's with some AC MX-4 ?

I got all temps pretty nice, just VRMs are getting quite hot and then when I get high temp in room + testing some OC I get lockups. I think I could get better OC if I could take down VRM temps a little.

What do you think ?

I've used paste to stick heat sinks to video cards and it worked just fine. That's kind of a big one though so there may be a weight issue.

I'd say try it, and if it falls off clean it off and buy some tape.

Isn't there any danger of circuit shorting or something ? I'am using paste for ram heatsinks for quit some time and it worked well so far.

Just that week ago when I did it this on R9 290, card locked up few times and than started artifacting etc and it's kind of dead now.

What paste did you use? When you're doing stuff like this, you gotta make sure your paste is non conductive, and non capacitive

when I did it I always used the cheap generic white stuff which is basically just silicone grease. AC mx-4 is ceremic based, and is both non conductive and non capacitive. Was that what you used on the other one? I've heard the 290 series is known to be unusually touchy about it's vrm temps. In particular the whole thing needs to be within 5c. it's not the actual temp so much as that the temp needs to be even.

Does anyone know if the 290/x Thermal pad adhesive for the vrm's is conductive? It went kinda messy with my red mod lol.

if you got the brand google will know. Seem to be 0 for 2 on vrm heatsinks though. I;m starting to wonder if it;s a bad idea in general.

Yes I used MX-4 too and I did like 20 cards I'am not newbie in installing coolers

Basically what happened wast that I put AC Extreme II on Sapphire R9 290, put it in PC started 3DMark 11 and at the end of second test whole pc locked up. So I restarted it, thinking there might be some driver issure or something because I just switched that R9 290 for 7950, did fresh reinstall of driver and launched 3DMark again, well it lasted like 5s more and locked up again. After this card started artifacting everywhere even in bios... and that's end of story.

Put stock cooler back and returned card within 14 days, because I can't wait 30 days for rma.

Oh and ofc I checked temps in GPU-Z, everything was absolutely fine, VMR's were like 50-60 and no heatsink fall off or something, everything looked ok to me.

I just don't get it. Faulty card ?

So as for 7950, it's absolutely safe to use MX-4 for VMR Heatsink than right ?
