Questions about USB Extension Cables

post #1 of 3
Thread Starter
Are USB 2.0 cables compatible with USB 3.0?

For example connecting a USB 2.0 extension cable to a USB 3.0 socket on a computer, and a USB 3.0 device to the extension cable.

USB 3.0 Socket ---> USB 2.0 extension cable (12 ft) --> USB 3.0 Device

Would the USB 3.0 device either not work, become glitchy, or not perform at USB 3.0 speed?

I'm guessing the answer is no. Am I right?

Side question, what is the safest length I should stay at to protect the signal strength in a USB extension cable?

It would run 2.0 because of the cable. On the 2nd , I would say 6ft, but it will always depend on the cable. I always check the reviews on something like that before purchase.
