R9 290X on Crossfire.

Thread Starter
I'm getting ready to buy an R9 290X, and long term am looking into Crossfireing it but given that the Crossfire runs through the PCI-E lanes I was wondering if anyone knew if PCI-E Gen2 x16 lanes would be suffecient for crossfireing these beasts. I have the Crosshair V motherboard, so I can run both cards at x16, but if I can't Crossfire them without bottlenecking 'em I might go with a 7990 instead, as it's in the same price range and already has two GPUs. Any information would be helpful, thanks in advance.

Pcie 2.0 won't do the strapless trick. 280xes still have strap connections, so you can just use a strap on them like they're 7970s and it will work. Dunno if the 290s have crossfire strap connectors for sure or not.

This review
has a pic that implies they do, at least on the reference models. (second from top) but it is a pre-release review, so I dunno.

I think I'll just grab a 290X and if I ever actually NEED to do crossfire I can always get a new MoBo. I have a feeling by the time I'll need to crossfire to keep up with games it'll be time to upgrade my mobo/cpu anyways.

Hawaii aka 290/x do not have crossfire fingers! There are no bridges. What the heck are straps?

Precisely, the crossfire signals are sent through the PCI-E lanes. I was wondering if PCI-E 2.1 x16 would be sufficient for Crossfire of the 290x, the answer was apparently not.

There will be no issues aside from your platform of choice. I've posted data on GEN2 vs GEN3 bandwidth on intel platforms in the 290 club. The take away point is no realistic differences for now. Your platform choice will make more difference than pcie bandwidth.

? Using two of those beasts in crossfire on a PCI-E Gen2 x16 wouldn't bottleneck the cards while communicating with each other?

Nope. GEN2 x16 is = GEN3 x8. The differences in my test were fractional at best from single panel to eyefinity triple 1080. It's posted in the club thread but that's freaking hard to find for me especially lol. Talk about a needle in a haystack at this point with all the posts.
