Obviously it's still early in development/ negotiations but Is the goal for free sync to be implemented as a standard for all future monitors, to be used with any gpu at no extra cost?

Mantle is not amd exclusive.

1. http://www.vesa.org/about-vesa/member-companies/ This is the reason behind Free-sync. Look at the list. This isn't AMD nor Nvidia it is more than just them. DP standards are a collective agreement by this list, a consortium if you will.

2. There is a huge difference in cost between the 2 not necessarily the amount but where the money goes. Gsync adds cost to Monitors in physical goods and paying Nvidia for use of the tech, a royalty so to speak. Freesync adds just the physical costs and no payments to anyone else, no royalties. (Would have thought this was an easy point but by the multitude of posts no one, NO ONE thought of this) doh.gif

3. Where exactly was this Free-sync exposed? At a function for the industry, not the consumers. The talk of Free-sync was more to point out the availability of the tech not attached to a proprietary pocket.
Quote:
but my guess is we’ll see more panel vendors encouraged to include support for variable VBLANK
This was to get some buzz and get more support for this new standard and hopefully a quicker adaption of it.

4. Free-sync isn't even an item or product, it is an idea. Its sole purpose was to get attention to DP standards not something AMD wants to produce (technically it already has been). AMD isn't trying to be the savior but they are trying to stand behind their beliefs moving forward and G-sync is contrary to that movement.

If you want to buy G-sync go ahead. A lot of people bought Titans. A lot of people buy things, amazing revelation I know. The one thing for certain, neither your or my opinion has any power to change that.

I am sure there is more but I will see what comes after this. The previous posts warranted too many 4 letter words that I don't want to go back and look for more points as of now.

Yes indeed, simple as cake to improve the technology for everyone, but why not charge $150 for a $4 part?

If you're buying a Gsync equipped display (which carries a $100 premium over a non-Gsync equipped equivalent display last time I checked), there is no hassle.

If you're buying the Gsync module for your Gsync-ready display, there's the hassle of installing it, which probably requires at least an hour of work, plus the cost of the module (I think it was $150?).

What I think might help a lot of people in here who are cranky is to look at it this way......

G-Sync allows early adopters, for some sort of premium, to get the feature they want now because it isn't standard.

FreeSync will hopefully create an industry wide standard that works with any GPU manufacturer as a native feature. It will require a couple of years to get going and see mass adoption, but eventually would happen.

Really if you look at it, there is something for EVERYONE! Those of us with the financial resources, and willingness to leverage that, can get in early. Those that don't have that resource or willingness to leverage it have the option of waiting for a standard in the future to give them what they want.

This shouldn't have ever been a G-sync vs FreeSync debate, but a "What can G-Sync do for us now, and FreeSync in the future?"

G-Sync is here, FreeSync is not. That doesn't mean we shouldn't support both until the industry nails down a standard!

I am pretty sure it has about zero to do with financial resources. I think most people just don't care either way, and view their monitors as good enough. Those that do care will buy it, if they want to. Also i am pretty sure by the nature of the tech G-sync is better and more real time adaptive.
